By order of Major General SLOCUM, d@. Wonnuy Maura, Assistant Adjutant General, THE NAVY. x THE WINOOSKI AND ALGONQUIN. ‘There seoms,to.be a probability that after all there is ‘to be a trial of the merits of the double-end gunboats ‘Winoocki and-Algonquin. . It was brought about in this way :—Mr. Dickerson, the designer of the Algonquin’s engine, suspected unfairness on the part of the Board of Naval Engineers, whom he argued could not, from the circumstances of their appointment, and acting under the orders of Chief Engineer Taher wood, United States Navy, give an impartial verdict ax to the relative merits of the ‘engines, At Mr. Dickerson’s suggestion a committee of e.vilian engineers met at the Novelty Works on last Fri- day afternoon, when they made a report or specifications upon what they considered just and equitable grounds. Those specifiertions do not materially froin the specifications 0 Navy Deparinent proposed to test the engines. It permits Me. Dickerson to make some alterations in the paddle wheels of the Algonquin, which he Lo y for the expangion of steam, whieh is facil! t-off”’ of his own invention, aul which he conaéders the great merit of his engine. ‘The engines of the yessels were not in motion yeeter- day, ‘The dook trial will take piace on Monday, the 18th jusi. Both sexsele will ran their engines for five eon- secutive Lours, in order to allow them to oll and key up. After that the actual trial of the merits of the engines will take place by running the engines for five conseeu- tive hours. The constmption of coal, revolutions of the wheels, pressure of steam &c., will be care! fully noted, JMYOSITIONS ON THE CREW OF TER WINOOSKI. A synopsis of the State Enumerators’ returns for the ‘Third ward is given below, and, like the returns of the other wards throughout the eity, will be found by those acquainied witb the locality to be palpably incorrect, There is no remedy to be had, however, for this fla, grant swindle, as our worthy Secretary of State has de- cided that no other enumeration can be had for ten years: to come, and in the interim the oilicial representation of our motropolis must be based on the returns of the re- Markably competent and intelligent enumerators who have not canvassed the several wards throughout the city. THE ENUMERATORS AS TEACHERS, Since the consus returns are to be regarded as authori- ties in the disposition of legislative representatives, and ake consequently standard documents of State, it would not appear very well to have the English language’ at variance on many points with the effusions of the intel- ligent enunerators of the Empire State, and in view of that fact it would be well for our citizens to have the late enumerators appointed as teachers of philology and pen- manship. Conclusion of the _ Inquest--Verdict Against the Husband, &c. ‘The investigation into the cause of the death of Laura Mills, at the Kagle office, Brooklyn, last Monday night or ‘Tuesday morning, was conclided before Coroner Barrett yesterday. The testimony of Dr. Willetts, who made the post-mortem examination, was quite important, showing that death was caused from external injuries, and not from any poison, as the prisoner stated a/ter his arrest. The following is the evidence:— James Leddy, sworn—Reside corner of Elizabeth and Dorghty streets, and work at 26 Fultow strect as a hostier; was thre all night on Monday; was sitting in the yard about midnight; heard several sereams; I went towards the fence in the direction of where the voce came from; it was the upper floor of the Kagl otliec; the shutters were open first, but shortly after I heard the noiso they were shut; I heard a noise as of something falling on the floor; I could not tell whether the shutters were shut bya man or a woman; Isaw Mr. De Mott that night; he was nearr the office than I was; can’t tell whether it was at the moment the screams were heard that De Mott came on heard only to screams and then the shutters were closed; Mr. Do Mott attonded her at the American Hotel, adjoin ing the Luigle dallding; went into the botel next day, and heard that a man i the Hag! ofies hol lost his wite, and T rop!'ert that “I thought thore was something wrong there thet n'ght;” think the screams wero in a female voice; could not'say iow many monutes elapsed alter I heard’ the screams until the siutters were clowd; saw a form coming to shut th> shutters, but con!d not teil whether it was a man or a woman; could not tell’ the windows were up or down; the screams windows in the Bagle offic. Willets, sworn, read the following state- le out spore examination September 13, 1805, of the body of Mrs. Tanra Mills, at the dead house in tbe city srooklyn, ‘Tho body was Ina good state of preservation, well developed and blanched in »p- pearauce. On the anterior part of the neck were ob- served two irregularly shaped discolorations, one on the right and the other on the left sido, and contrally over the w-ndpipe was a third, abont the size of a half ‘dollar, On the left side of the back, from the shoulder bids down, to the bones of the polvis, was a black and bluc diseolora- tion, which did not extend to the right side, ‘There was also @ slight bruise on the right external to and somowhat above the eye. ‘The abdominal cavity seomed to be very much distended, Upon open- ing the body the following appearances wore noticed: — Bra'a bealthy, with a small amount o° seram in the ventricles; cart and lungs healthy, but pale; on the left tide of the chest were old and Very fir adhesions; liver fatty, exhibiting numerous points, the result of former disease; slat adhesions (ol) between that or- gan aud the diaphrazm; spleen twice the usual size, but fiz normal color; sto healthy in* pearance, containing about four omees of liqu ys, bladder, womb and ovatica health: in the cavity of the abdom 'n was a large exiravasation of blood, part- ly coagulated and partly uot, and of a dark venous hue, Tn iy opinion the deceased came to her death by hem- orrbige, eaus-d by the rapture of a blood vessel in the abdominal cavity, Dortor Willets gave the following testimony, explain. ing soine portions of his writen statement:—The bruise on the temple might have been caused by a fell or bra if it was eansed by a blow from a bottie the blow must have been a very shght one; T found no injuries around the head snifictent to cause ‘death; the discoloration on the right silo might have been caused by blows of some ind or a beavy fall; blows from the bottle shown might ‘© causcd it; the heart und Jungs were pale, but healthy; the paleness was caused by the los of blood: a blow or blows from the bottle shown would cause the ropturo of the blood vessel; think death ecevrred in two or three hours afier the rupture; in this case a fall from n bed cightoen inches or two feet high would not, in my opinion, cause the injuries deseribed; I do not Uiink thas one blow from the bottle would eause the dis- piovation; I as-oviate the bruises with the rupture of the blood vessel; the brain was pert etly healthy; there vas NO appeardice of any poison—no appoarance or amell of landanuia was discornible in the cont coloration could have b ngn’s clothes all on, provided the blows though. Ths “concluded the testimony, and the Coroner pro- ceeded to charge the jury. He called titeir attention to the faet that the evidence was all circumstantial; that the prisoner and deceased lived alone tu the upper pprt of a Jarge building, where no one comkl witness what took place on the night of the occurrence wh'eh led to ills? de: to prove that the prisoner had bec , only the statement made by hin F his arrest; and his statements hat oc ion were vory contradictory and confl-ctin, he statement of the decsased, made to Dr, Johnson edeath and after being informed of her cond tion, was a very finportant point, which he desired thom to weigh welt in doliberating on their verdiet, Here was a woman jnst ab tho point of death, and it was not likely that she would go into the presence of her God with # lie upon her soul. Ho would, therefore, inpress upon the minds of the jury the importane> to be given to that patuicitlar point of the case, He also calied their at~ tention to tie testimony of Elizabeth Hicks, who heard the prisoner on one occasion, while be had a knile in his hand, say that “he wished it was thre gh ler (Mrs. Mills) heart.” Although that wes not dence in the present case, yet it was a collab whieh they tconsider to’ eid them in arriving at a proper verdic The jury theo retired, and after returned ‘with the following verdie Lavra Mills came to her death by bene by the ruptare of & blood vessel in wie abd said rupture boing the resalt of injuties inflicted by ber hosband, Francis Mills, on tac morning of the 120k mst., at their fesidence in the £ gle byilding, Fulton street, ‘The prisoner was then arraigaed by the Coroner, instrncted him in the absene guilty.” In answer to the y n absence of ap hour it the said county Down, profession, He ‘in Columbia, Se county jail to await the action of the Grand Ju The Business of New York.
