"a 2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Wapnespay, Sept. 6—6P. M. “The stock market was depressed and the fooling very tame. At the ten o'clock session of the ‘open board this morning Erie closed at the call at 87%, Reading 106%, Michigan Southern 6534, Cleveland and Pittsburg 71%, Rock Island 1093, Fort Wayne 97%, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 2844. At th first regu- lar board, however, there was an effort made to rally prices, and @ general improvement took place. New York Central closed 5; higher than at the second board yesterday, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Rock Island %, Ohio and Mississippi certificates %, Cumberland %. Hudson River, Northwestern and Quicksilver were un- changed. Erie was 1 per cent lower, Reading %, Prairie du Chien 3. Government securities were steady. ‘There was a sale of Merchants’ Bank stock at 109 and Central National at 10534. Atthe open board, at one o'clock, the market was steady, with the oxception of Erie, which was a % lower. At the second regular board there was a fractional advance in a portion of the list, Reading closed % higher than at the first board, Michigan Southern %, Cleveland and Pittsburg }, Northwestern 3%, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 3, New York ‘Contral was unchanged. Erie was } lower. Rock Island 3, Quicksilver 3. Government securities continued @teady, but dull. At the open board, at half-past three, the market was fnactive. Coupon five-twenties of the new issue sold at 106%, Erie 88%, Reading 10734, Michigan Southern 6%, Cloveland and Pittsburg 72%, Northwestern pre- ferred 635, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 29, Quicksilver 50%. Afterwards on the street the market ‘was lower. The petroleum stock market showed increased activity at the first board, and prices wore, on the whole, steady. ‘Watson closed 20c. higher than at the first board yester- day. Excelsior was 8c. lower, United States 20c. At the second board the market was inclined to heaviness, ‘Webstor closed at $1 73, Excelsior $1 21, Tack 44c., Buchanan Farm 71c., United States $27 85. The gold market showed great firmness, and there was ‘fan active demand for coin for immediate delivery, upon which the price was bid up from 1445, at the opening to 145. The closing quotation was 144%. The shipment of specie by the Persia amounted to $170,000. Foreign exchange was dull and bankers’ sterling at sixty days sold at 1093;. Tho money market continues easy at 5a6 per cent, Dut there are fewer transactions at the former rate, owing mainly to the increased demand for money. The diacount line employs a considerable amount of capital, and the best grade of commercial paper passes at seven per cent and the secured at 8 a 10. Although there is no possibility of monetary stringency, according to present indications, it is reasonable to presume that the supply of Joanable funds at this point will undergo some diminu- tion within a short time in consequence of remittances westward to move the crops and the general re-distribu- tion which follows government disbursements, But this will not be likely to interfere materially with the move- ments and purposes of the bull party in stocks. The de- cline in the market value of the latter to- day is due to natural causes. The floating crowd of profeasional operators which follows the lead of the Broad street clique has been on the “bull” side of the market since the Ketchum and Graham failure, and now it is practically what is called loaded up with them. Most of these stocks are held ata profit, and it is natural that there should be a disposition to sell among the holders. There are some parties, it is rumored, who have been “‘short’’ from the time of the fanic of August, and these are said to be in high glee over 4 prospective fallin the market; but it is well ‘remind thom of the importance of not counting thiir chickens before they are hatched. The ‘‘bears’? arojust a8 unscrupulous in serving their own ends as the “itis,” and unmitigated falsehoods aro as freely pro- muljated by the one party as the other. Deception isa gamaplayed by both, and such are the demoralizing in- fluengs of speculation that most speculators lie involun- tarily.. Some of those, even, whose business it is to speak te truth concerning matters with which they are acquained yield to the influence of cliques, and prosti- tuto thei opinions. A’case\f some interest to stock brokers has just been decided—tamely, that of Jaudon & Co. vs. Grey. The plaintiffs §ed.for five buadred dollars—the loss beyond five hundra@ dollars margin on ove bundred shares of Erie purchaed for defendant on 21st March, 1864, at 125%. The faintiffs sent a demand for more margin ‘and notice of ele in default to defendant's place of busi- ness, but he wi out of town at the time. He, however, yoturnod on Apt! 26, when the stock was selling at 117, but meanwhile be stock had been sold out at 108, The rage was submittéd to the jury after the Court made the following charge, and a verdict was returned for the plaintiffs for the ful amount claimed: — Fir—If the jury betieve that the defendant bought the atock for investinent and not for speculation, and the plaintiffs sold out the ame without proper notice, then the defendant must reover from plaintiffs his margin of ‘Second—The notice served at defendant's place of busi- nes during his absence is a sutficient notice, and de- fondant is bound by it, though not personally served. Third—It the jury believe that the defendant bought the stock on speculation, and with the understanding that he must keep his margin good, and defendant failed to do 80 when the stock declined, then plaintiffs were au- thorizod to sell out his stock at the public board, and the plaintiffs should recover full amount claimed. ‘Tho old La Crosse and Milwaukee suit is to come up again before the United States Circuit Court at Milwaukee noxt week, and some capitalist is wanted to advance the money to pay the part due interest on the second inet gage bonds to prevent the road from being sold The ‘amount to be paid is $450,000. The Acton copper mine of Canada, belonging to a Bos- ton corporation, was sold at auction in that city on Satur- day for twenty thousand three hundred and fifty dollars. The company was originally started with a capital of half a million dollars, divided into two hundred thousand shares of ten dollars anda half each. Like many of our petroleum swindles, it was immediately inflated, until the public was dragged into it at seven dollars per share, when it collapsed aud went down to almost nothing, and the fable of the spider and the fly was brought forcibly to the minds of the victims. Such will be the fate of nineteen-twenticths of the oil companies that have been organized within the last four years, with this difference, that the Acton Company paid to its stockholders ten cents on the dollar, while the petroleum concerns will not pay acent. ‘The receivers of the Vermont and Canada and Ver- mont Central railroads have petitioned the Chancellor of Vermont for authority to raise the sum of $700,000 by the issue of Canada stock or otherwise. Accompanying this petition was a statement by the trustees of the in- come and expenditures for the two years ending Juao 1, 1865, from which we make the following abstract :— Incomes for the year ending June 1, 1864..... . $1,227,807 Expenses during same time 940,843 Net balances. $286,963 Incomes for yea 1,434,631 Expenses first six months 1699, 201 Expenses second six mout! 566,000 Net balance. + $168,829 —Being less than the internal revenue on Vermont and Canada, amounting to $180,000.
