2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Mowvay, August 23—6 P.M, ‘The first of the ten o'clock sessions of the open board took place this morning, when a moderate amount of business was transacted, at the following prices:—Old five-twonties 106%, Erie 874, Hudson River 100%, Rouding 10534, Michigan Southern 64%, Rock Island 10834, Fort Wayne 97. At the first session of the regu- tar board the market was rather dull, but steady. Michi- xan Southern closed 3g Ligher than at the first board on Saturday, Rock Idand 4, Prairiédu Chien 1%, Quick- silver %%; Erie and New York Central were unchanged ; Reading was 3s lower, Cleveland and Pittsburg 34, Ohio and Mississippi certitieates 4 Government securities were firm at Saturday's prices. One year certificates advanced 3{. Five-twenties of the ‘old tssue sold at 106%. The jatest London advices report the latter at 68 & 4g on the 17th inst., and 68 on the 18th. At the open board at one o'clock the market was about 34 percent lower, At the second regular board it was dull, but steady. Erie closed §§ lower than at the first board, Reading 14, Camberland !z, Quicksilver %. Rock Island and Ohioand Mississippi certiticates were un- changed, Cleveland and Pittsburg was 3; higher, North- western 3. Government secarities were inactive, Coupon ten-forties declined 34, At the open board at halfpast three the market was heavy and prices underwent a further roces- sion. New York Central closed on the call at 9274; Erie, 86%; Michigan Southern, 64; Ilmots Central (33), 1223(; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 703¢ ; Northwestern, preferred, 62};; Ohio and Mississippi cerlilcates, Pore) Cumberland, 42. ‘The depression in the stock” market this afternoon is attributable in some degree to the sales made at the close of jast week by the leading member of the Erie “pull clique, ‘The sales are supposed to have consisted of a large portion of the stocks, Erie excepted, which were thrown «pon him by the Ketchum and Graham failures, and some of these fell into the hands of weak holders to- » main object of the Broad streot party in buying they are selling other stocks is to sustain ral market at the cost of supporting Erie only. Morcover, the leading member of the clique referred to is preparing to fortify bis position, with a view to re- election to the directory of the company. The books of the latter, it is stated, will be closed on the 10th of Sep- tember io preparation for the election, the precise time ot which is not yet fixed. That a prominent director of one of our most important lines of railway, who habitu- ally makes it his Dusinoss to manipulate the stock of his own company in Wall street, should have his re-election opposed by those of his codirectors uot of his own party, is hardly a matter for surprisé ‘The petroleum stock market was steady at the first board, the chief activity being in Zack and Pithole Creek. ‘The former closed on the call at 39c. and the latter at $875. Webster suld at $175, Buchanun Farm 63c., Bradley (bs) $310, Cherry Run 23¢., Heydrick $1 90, Hevdrick Brothers $135, United States $2780, Oceanic 90c., Oil Creek $3 60. The goid market was firm, but inactive, The opening price was 14574, from which there was an advance to followed by a relapse of 34, and a recovery at the ol to 144, ‘The transactions in foreign exchange have been very light, but rates are steady. Bankers ask 109% for their sixty day sterling. ‘The easy conditton of the money market is reflected in the statemont of the associated banks for the week, The deposits show an increase of $4,490,660, and the. legal tenders of $8,665,818, This indicates an absence of dis- trust on the part of the country banks and others in the interior having balances to their credit here. It was. feared when the Ketchum suspension was ‘announced that there would be a rapid withdrawal of funds from this point owing to a loss of confidence; but the efforts of the banking and other finaneinl institntions of this city to avert a panic were promptly seconded by those elsewhere. The most unusual feature in the statement is the large reduction of $3,580,021 in specie. This is owing to some extent to the withdrawals {or cotton pur- chases in the South; but it is also partly due to the omission of some of Edward Ketcnum’s forged gold checks from the count. And it may be that the Clear- ing House is endeavoring to check the practice which has prevailed of counting a portion of the gold lodged in the Bank of New York twice. The banks now acknowl- edge holding only $16,023,616 in specie. The conserva- tive policy pursued both by lenders and borrowers during the week has resulted in a decline of $1,404,276 in loans, The motion for an injunction to restrain Sheridan shook, collector of Internat Revenue, from collecting, and Mx, Gilbert, the assessor, from assessing the tax on brokers’ sales made on their own account, was argued hefore Judge Nelson, of the United States Cireurt Court, at Cooperstown, on Friday and Saturday last. The Judge reserved his decision. There is a general desire expressed in Wall street that Edward Ketchum may suffer the due penalty of his crime, and the course Mr. Oakey Hall, the District Attorney, parsued in preferring the complaint of forgery against him in the absence of a private prose- cutor 1s highly commended. The prisoner, as the law reports will show, was remanded till Monday next for examination. The parties whose names were forged are, however, singularly apathetic with regard to the prosecti- tion, and look upon 2 subpenaas a nuisance. Wall street men are, by the force of habit, the reverse of litigious, and only where important interests are at stake are they disposed to enter a court of law. Brtin a case of this kind something more than utter indifference might be expected. The Chicago Republican of the 26th remarks: — The money market remains without any new features to-day. The demand, ss noted in our last report, con- tinues good, in iact, active, andthe market is reported close and firm by all, or nearly all, the leading discount houses. The demand for money Is mostiy from specu- Jators and shippers in and of grain. Good ie dis. counted readily at the banks at ten per cent, but doubt: ful securities are difficult to negotiate on any terms. CONCLUSION OF THE INQUISITION—CENSURE OF DR. NEWBY—THE LAW GOVERNING THE CASH. Coroner Collin yesterday renewed the investigation previously commenced in the case of Mr. Edward C. Andrews, whose death was the result of injuries re- cetved by Jumping from a fourth story window of the Union Place Hotel, on the evening of the 20th inst., while suffering from delirium tremons. The only wit- nega examined was the brother of deceased, who testified as follows :— Henry R. 8. Andrews, being duly sworn, ant gene at No. 608 Broadway; I am brother of deceased informed about eight o’clock on Sunday evening, tive 2018 inst., of my brother’s illness at the Union Place Hotel; went up there and found him ina high state of fever, very delirious; Isat down on the bed with him; deceased requested me to get hima glass of ice water; I went into the sitting room, and di my absence he jumped from the window; it a on the fwurth story; I sent di- rectly for Dr, Newby; I immediately ran down stairs; he was taken into a bedroom on the first floor; I sat up with my brother all that night; he was able to converse but feebly; he seemed to improve the latter part of the night, and was able to eat some soup in the morning; I did not see much of him until Monday aftenoon ; he was then just about on the point of death; I went out and telegraphed to my sisters; when I re- turned he was dead, and they were making a post mor- tem examinat on.
