Now, I propose that there be ap- pointed one out of the number of our city fathers (from whom all blessings flow), or, if yo will, that one of the Supervisors of the city of New York be appointed to take the census of the district bounded by Greenwich, West, Fulton and Barclay, and Greenwich, Washipgton and Barclay, north to Chambers street, and when finished to be sworn to before a notary public that it is correct to the best of his knowledge and belief, and.I will wager from five hundred to ten thousand dollars that his enumeration will not exceed mine in number ten per- sons, with the understanding that no namo shall be taken of any person who has become a resident of said istrict subsequent to the Ist day of June, 1865. cy THAD WARD ENUMERATOR, fol of corn were destroyed. The track was not in- jured. On the Pittsburg and Fort Ndr road no damage was done, The crops, however, suffered heavily. ‘The Great rn road sustaincd no injury. The damage to crops does not appear to have been so heavy as in other districts, On the line of the Chicago and Rock Island road a severe broak occurred near the town of Peru. Several hundred feet of the track were washed away in one place, and at various parts of tho road, over a distance of many miles, the grading of the track was injured. On the line of the Chicago and Northwestern road the most serious damage was done. A portion of the track was washed away, a train of passenger cars ran into the break and four lives were thereby lost. The regular night train left Fulton at ten o'clock, and when two miles west of Morrison station the sad accident occurred. At the spot where the accident took place there is a large culvert which has hitherto been sufficient for all pur- poses. The oxcessive rains of Monday night, however, carried the culvert and a large piece of the track away, and, the night being exceedingly dark, the engine driver must have been unable to see the break until right at it. The forward portion of the train plunged into It, and the locomotive and tender and baggage car were dashed to pieces, and one of the passenger coaches badly broken, There were four persons killed by this melan- choly occurrence. Their names are:—J, H. Beobe, en- gineer; John Fenton, fireman; Stephen Thatcher, ex- ress messenger; L. B. Lewis, passenger, ell, jowa. Two or three other persons were injured, but nono seriously.
