Admiral Farragut at Rye Beach. {Correspondence of the Boston Traveller. ] Atiantic Houst, August 9, 1865. The hot, sultry weather of the past few days has at length yielded to tho influence of grateful showers and cooling breezes, which have kissed, in thelr Journey to tho sea, the mountain ridges of the far North. The verdure of the fields has been restored and the forest sings a new song of gladness for the rain that has fallon on tho dry and thirsty earth, A more perfect day than that of yesterday could not possibly be imagined. And how timely the cool, invigorating atmosphere, for the fall enjoyment of the various pleasures anggested by the many resources of this locality, culminating at even- ing in another brilliant and agrecable ovation to the honored guest of Rye Beach—Vice Admiral Farragut. Tho guests of the Ocean House, desirous of uniting in some marked demonstration in honor of the noble herg of the American navy, selected the. 8th of August for a public reception at that house. Ina matter like this, where all hearts beat in sympathetic unison, it was not difficult to carry out any plan that contemplated a com- pliment to the brave officer, But in order to perfect the n arrangemonts the following committees were appointed :— C.mmitice of Arrangements—Joreph Blackwood, Esq., Philadelph'a, Hon. Erle; are to boraised to ihe peerage, The prominent object of the ar- rangement will be to increase the judicial power of the Howse of Lords, and strengthen the cause of Law Reform, by attaching; to the side of Lord Cronworth wwonvle, enlightened and liberal lawyers. There ia no truth in the story that M. de Girardin has bought the Pompeian villa of Prince Napoleon, 5 cur. 3 residence and its appurtenances are mas vt; and any capitalist desirous of J i) days at Pompei will do well to buy one of certainly tt rettiest imitations of the houses where Giautus and jone used to make love, and buy flowers of the blind girl, ‘The Prince has, however, removed mort of the val collection of works of art which was formerly inthe villa, Ar Warr iat: Bs Te to of the Windsor garrison, and while passing through the quarters of the 2d Lifo Guards, accompanied by the eolone! of the regiment, was much attracted by the ap- pearance af a small and very pretty terrier dog named * Dick,” belonging to Corporal Woodhouse, one of the bandsmen The Queen caressed the little dog, and spoke to it. This saved its life, for the colonel gave orders that ‘ Dick” should be allowed te live, while the rest of the dogs were killed in accordance with the edict that had gone forth. Dick is now the favorite of the regiment, and is jored with a collar decorated with the regimental buttons, and on the plate of whieh are some unquestionable dog-grel lines narrating how the animal’s life was saved. AN Avrreria Ixctoexr.—When the Fortioth Missouri arrived on the steamer Olive Branch, a woman, with joy sparkling in her eyes, hurried on board, With a buoyant step and a palpitating heart she scauned the different companics drawn up on the deck. “Where is Company K?” she eagerly inquired. “Over there,” replied a soldier, poiatlogis the direction of Company K. The woman astened to the spot, and, passing rapidly in front of the sunburnt faces of the men, gazed at each with a keen, penetrating glance. She was looking for her husband, who had written to her from Montgomery, Alabama, that the regiment would start for home on tho following day, and that in a short time he would be with her. Once more sho passed along the lino, scanning the faces with a closer scrutiny, but failed to ‘find the ono she sought. At length she timidly addressed one of the soldiers: “Is thisCompany K?”” “Yes,” I am looking for my husband—whero is he?” “What is his name?’ “Walker.” “Oh, he feil overboard and was drowned in thr Alabama river.” The poor woman clasped her hands over her face, and, without saying another word, passed slowly from the boat back to the shore, seeming to walk without tho use of her eyes, Her heart was too full for ‘utterance, and the great agony that come so sud- @enty upon her sealed her lips and checked the fountain of her tears; but the men of tron nerve who saw her and Knew the cause of her sorrow wept hke. children. —Mis- sourt Denveorat, August 1, MPE en HOUSES, ROOMS, &C., TO LET.
