The now Fire Commissioners wore in sossion yestor- day, and held a conference with Chief Engineer John Decker, who handed in the following communication, volunteering his services to the new department until some different arrangement can be made:— Orrics Cammy Engineer Fine DerartMent, New York, June 27, 1865. Pinckney, Esq., President Board of Metropoli- tan Fire Commissioners :-— Sir—To your note of the 23d instant, desiring me to continue in the performance of my duties as Chief Engi- neer until further notice, I respectfully reply that in ac- cordance with my own feelings I desire to retire from active duty, as I am not an applicant for the position, but in order to act consistently, and to carry out the spirit of the resolutions adopted by the Board of ‘ngincers and Firemen of the volunteer Fire Department while the controversy relative to the constitutionality of the bill was pending, and while the public mind was fearful that the old department would refuse to perform duty, I volunteered my services to the new organization until a reasonable time shall have elapsed snffoiont for the new Board of Fire Commissioners to take charge ren matters appertaining to the department. On the 10th inst. the body of a man was picked up by | sloop outward bound, near Fort Schuyler, New York | harbor. A boat from the sloop was immediately lowered and the body of the drowned man brought to the fort Quartermaster Bergen promptly notified Coroner Oliver, of Mott Haven, Westchester county, of the fict, and on the morning of the 20th an inquest wae held, when the usual verdict in such cases was pronounced. Deceased was about thirty-live years of age, five feet ten inches high, and frota appearance must have been drowned more than a month. He had the photograph of s young lady and two hundred and ten dollars on his person, whic hare in the possession of Coroner Oliver. Whigham, residing at No. 23 North Moore street, In his aM@davit Mr. Whig- ham sots forth that on the 14th day of December last he loaned Craver $350, and as collateral seourity took a chattel mort; on'stx Wheeler & Wilson sowing ma- chines, of which Crngor represented himself to be the sole owner. Mr. Whigham recently called upon Cruger for his money, which ho failed to obtain, and ho was also equally unsuccessful in learning the whereaboute of the sewing machines mentioned in the mortgage. In his aMdavit Mr. Whigham alleges that at the time of makin, the representations upon which the money was wee Crugor did not own all the sewing machines in ns and that it was the intent of the accazed to cheat and defraud him out of hia money. BURGLARY IN THIRTY-FIPTH BTREST Two young men, named Hugh Tracy and James O'Brien, were arrested by officors Crowley and Poole, of the Twentioth precinct, charged with breaking into the dwelling house of Mr. Sidnoy ©. Genin. They wore caught in the house, tho occupants of which are absent in the country, and Justice Dodge committed the prison ers forstrial, in dofault of $2,000 bail each. ‘The accused parties had gathered togethera bundle of clothing, valued at $1,000, with which they were about to escape when the officora intruded themselves, DEADLY ASSAULT WITH A SWORD. AdiMeoulty occurred in the lager beer and concert saloon of Joseph Sweetzor, cornor of Doyer street and the Bowery, late on Monday night, between the pro- rietor and Charles Wadelo, a resident of Rondout, Gister county, when Sweetzer drow a sword and struck Wadele acroas the head with it, inflicting a severe wound.
