There is a more confident feeling for a rise in the street than has been felt during the last few days, and ‘operations are based accordingly, The gold market has been stronger to-day than since the beginning of the week. There is some apprehension that the pay- ment of the July interest on the sixes of 1981 and other ‘securities will depress gold and so far affect other secu- rities; but, figuratively speaking, it will be a drop in the Ducket in influencing the course of gold. The supply in the entire country is altogether too mall to prevent the market from preserving a directly upward tendency, Those who preach that greenbacks are better than gold may continue to preach, but they cannot influence the ultimate result, however much they may affect the temporary course of prices; and that in any case will be but little. The imports at this port from the Ist of July, 1864, to the end of May, 1865, were only $150,271,911, ag@lnst $25,593,132 for the corresponding period in 1863. The increase, therefore, amounts to $65,321,231. It is supposed by many that cotton will be shipped from New Orleans and other ports in sufficient quantity to turn the exchanges in our favor; but this expectation is not only likely but almost certain to be disappointed. Our imports will in- crease largely, and our exports will merely increase in an infinitesimal degree. Excepting the trifling cotton crop of the present year in Texas and elsewhere, upon ‘which only we have to depend for the next fifteen months, we can calculate upon no largely increased ex- ports, Mr. E. H. Birdsall has succeeded Mr. Russell as cashier of the Sub-Treasury in this city. Mr, Birdsall has been hitherto for many years at the head of the Receiving Department. SURPRISE OF BURGLARS IN THE BOWERY—ONB OF THEM ARRESTED—ANOTHER ESCAPES. Yesterday morning, about one o'clock, as roundsman Loonie, of the Fourteenth precinct, was on duty in the Bowery, he received information that two men had been seen to scale a brick wall which admitted them to the rear of Mr. Thomas M, Cartan’s cloak and mantilla store, 232 Bowery, corner of Prince street, The roundsman Tapped for assistance, and at the same time proceeded to the spot, where he heard a noise in the yard. Asking ‘Who's there?” the officer was answered by two men, who said they were coming over the wall into Prince street, and going home. In a moment afterwards two in- dividuals, one of whem had a revolver in his hand, mounted the wall and leaped down to the pavement. Officer Loonie seized one of the men, who and a desperate struggle ensued between them; but a blow on the head with the baton brought the eee to terms. He gave his name as John Green. During the fight Green’s accomplice, who had the pistol, escaped, and has not since been taken. ‘afterwards, as roundsman Loonie was on the way to the station house, Green turned w and endevored to strike hrm in the face with Bien which he drew from his pocket, but the blow did not take effect. At the same moment, with one tremendous effort, he proke away from the officer and ran through Prince street to Mott, but beg med the Cathedral Loonie overtook his prisoner knocked him down again with his locust. Green was safely lodged in the station house, and subsequently Justice Dowling committed him to the Tombs for without: bail, Green is 22 years of age, a native of Canada, a sailmaker by occupation, and lives at 186 Forsyth street, A jimmy and other burglarious implements intended to be used in breaking open arear door leading into Mr. Cartan’s store, were found in the yard by roundsman Loonie. The police have some clue to Green’s confede- rate, and are making offorts to arrest him. Stock Exchange. ‘Wapwespay, Juno 21—10:30 A.
