The markot closed heavy. There is little or no disposition to operate for a rise, and, although the buli leaders support the market by taking what the bears offer, this ia not sufficient to fully counteract ite downward tendency io the absence of outside buyers. The spirit of speculation on the Stock Exchange at preaent presents but a glimmer of ite former self, and the depression which is creeping over It seems typical of that which before Jong must overtake tho whole country, We have im tho maintenance of a glorious and righteous cause bad occasion to tax our supplies of money and labor beyond our current re- sources, and, ag @ natural consequence, more or less temporary exhaustion must follow, The gold market bas been free from excitement, but te tendency bas been upward. The opening quotation was 136, from which it momentarily deciined to 135% @ %, but afterwards rose gradually to 137, the price at twenty minutes past one P. M. It subsequently rejapsed to 13654, but soon after ive P. M. bad risen to 137%. The volume of speculative transactions is not large, and cash gold is abundant, owing to the withdrawals of specie trom tho banks and private hoards consequent upon the recent rise, Foreign exchange bas been in brisk demand, and, owing to the extreme gcarcity of commercial bills, bank- ore have'to rely upon specie shipments to cover (heir Grafts. Lending drawers ask 110% 0 \¢ for eixty day bille, but transactions are recorded at 110 and 110% 0 % for short sight. Merchants’ bills are quoted at 109% a &. Our forcign trade is operating very injuriously against ue in draining (be country of the gold which it can iil afford to ioge in view of the pre sent suspension and the future resumption of specie pay- ments. The shipment of gold last week exceeded two millions three hundred thousand, and in the previous week it was above three mi!!ions Our receipts of gold from California, on the other band, have beeo as follows:— ‘The steamer of the 6th instant brought $664,281, that of the 15th $225,376, and that of the 25th $367,993 The total receipts in January were $2.042,347; in February, $1,844,214; in March, $1,825,312, and in April, $2,165,637. Thie makes a total of $8,054,662 since the Ist of January — sum above the average of former years, the receipts during the corresponding period of 1864 having been only $5,167,518, and for the same time in 1363, $6,439,787; but it Is still quite inadequate to meet the foreign drain which bag set io, and which must, under present circumstances, continue, unless our foreign trade 18 to be utterly paralyzed Notwithstanding our specie governme! ing to & TT will be dated on the 16th of July, the taterest being at the rate cf seven and three-tenths percent tn currency or sis per ceot ip goid, af the option of the govern- The rece pts of gold at thi port from Califoruls this year me tp 1564 as followe:— 1866 1868 dancers 6. $241,728 January §.. A strike is now and then made by those who continue the business, which serves to encourage the fese fortunate workers, ard also to keep the stock of shadowy companies ats jotable price. Twelve new corporations have been or- ganized during the past fortnight, bi an aggregate capital of $2,050,000, and ono million six bundred and seventy thousand shares, The receipts of the Racine and Mississippi and North- erp Hilinois railroads from January 1 to May 21 amounted to $184,513, which is an increase over the oarnings Cor tho same time in 1864 of $5,271. Neither can we look for any materia) increase of ‘the latter; for the total amount received from Ca!:forcia im the year 1863 wae only $11,905,478, and in 1964 $12,952,967. The amouat of specie in the backs end Sub-Treasury in this city op the Ist of Jaouary ‘was only $30,054,450, which, however, wae increared— owing to our light imports and merchants avd bankers deferring their remittances tn anticipation of the decline ofthe premium—to $39,897,087 on the let of May. But this total has since beeo reduced by the shipments. Against this Kmited supply of specie there is a demand | 800 do... for about a million aod a balfa week for customs duties at this port, the receipts under this head for the weck ending on Saturday last having been $1,665,563, besides the export demand; and it unfortunately happens tbat there is no very profitable market for our produce abroad at tho proseat prices hero and there. The consequenco {s that, our markets being upprecedently bare of foreign goods, we are compelled to import much more than we cal port; and as the genera! conditions of our foreign trade apply to our securities, therois oothing with which we can pay balancesexcept gold We ai herefore, for the time being, actually dependent upon a rise of the Premium for an active export trade—a most anomalous condition of affairs, it must be admitted. And euch are the intorests of trade that there are but few of the mer- cantilo community who do not secretly rejoice over a riso in gold. When it is remembered that the danks of Boston, before the transfer of any of their sumber to the national eystem began, beld but Ave millions of specie, which bas rince beeo reduced wo fess than two and half millions; that the banks of Philadelphia hold but 006 mitlion two bundred and eighty-Ove thousand dol- lars, and that all the other banks 10 the Northern, West- ern Middie states—California, cf course, exciuded— bavean aggregate of not more than cine miltions of apecio, it will be eeen that the supply of gold cuteide of private boards is by no mesos sufficiently large to en- courage the idea of a speedy teeumption of specie pay- ments. The banks of Tlinols have only eno million eight hundred thousand dollars in epecia, and those of Wiscon- sin one million three hundred thousand. The fact is, we have been gradually losing our epecie since the com- menoement of the war, and present appearances indicate a further exhaustion of the remainder in the future. The money market, under the rather light demand from the Stock Exchange, is moderately casy at six per cent for call loana; but the rate is Orm, and exceptional transactions bave been made at reven. There is no canse for apprehending stringency, as ft is the wish of the Treasury Department to keep the supply of funds atthe great ceutres inexcess of the requirements of borrowers. The statement of the arrociated banks for the weok shows acertain amount of contraction. The loans have decreased $7,365,669, the deposits $6,773,708, and the specie $1,130,473. The circulation exbibits an increase of $28,649. The supply of legal tender paper ts reduced « little more thana million. The discount line is without any special feature beyond dullness, and first class commercial paper is rated at 7 a 8 per cent, and the middle grade at 9 a 10, The surrender of the rebel forces in tho Trans-Mis- siaaipp! region disposes, aa a matter of course, with the restrictions hitherto imposed upon trade with the foreign porta under the English, Spanish and Mexican govern- ments adjacent to Southern ports weet of the Mississippi. Today a shipment from this city to Matamoros was made without the shipper being required to give bonds, by permission of the Custom House authorities, This is the first of the kind which has taken place for three yearsaod abalf. That partof the President's procia- Mation reopeniag the Southern ports, but excepting ports west of the Misrissippi from its operation, will doubtless #oon be modified by another proclamation ex- tending equal privileges to trade west as well as east of the great river.
