tt De ee a FINANCIAL AND! COMMERCIAL. Tuunspay, May 18—6 P. M. ‘The stock market, which was further depressed last night and this morning by bear influences, ade- cline at the first board, as compared with the second of yesterday, in Erie of 4;, New York Central 134, Reading 134, Fort Wayne 1%, Michican Southern 134, Dlinois Cen- tral, Oleveland and Pitisburg 1%, Rock Island 14, judaou River 24, Quicksilver }. Government so “¢ were dull, Coupon five-twonties dealiued 3. past three the improvement continued, and quotations ad- vanced J¢ a13¢, Erie being the most buoyant stock on the list, Erie closed at 734, New York Central 9014, Read- | ing 9334, Rock Island 943/, Michigan Southern 60%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 643;, Fort Wayne (8.3) 9394, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 2634, Quicksilver 54. Later, on the street, the market showed increased activity, and prices were firm. The bugbear of a tight money market boing dispelled, the natural tendency of the market ts towards reaction. ‘The bulls would make believe that w large advance awaits tho market, while the bears aro equally anxious to propagate the idea, to alarm the street ‘and fill their own pockets, There is no doubt that bulls and bears are about equally unscrupulous, their expressed opinions are therefore without value, ‘The bull of to-day may be the bear of to-morrow, and Buch financial weathercocks are deserving of no better than that of preying upon each other. The most | of their number are usually the most success- business, which shows that sound theories, based Soa tener of the value of the stocks dealt @p the Stock Exchange, pass for naught. Thecaprice of speculation, based upon nothing worth mentioning, is potent in ruling the market. The price of a stock of any kind in Wall strect may be safely assumed ‘to-bo.no-criterion of its real worth, and if speculation in , stocks could be entirely extinguished it woukl bea beneilt ‘to the community ; for, as it ie, the market i the arena , fanetiof gamblersywho might be meve ereditably em- "ployed in any other pursuit, ‘Tho gold market has becn dal! but steady te-dny. Ont, ‘speculators have lost interest mm it to'a great extent, the amount of business has diminished aceordingly. ‘opening quotation was 130, frem which there was a of %, followed by an advance to 130%, and at » ‘tive P. M. it stood at 130%. The people have reasen to vongratulate themselves on the thinning out of the Gold Room, which has always exerted an evil inflaence upon the country, speculators being, of cours», guided only by their own interest, regardiess of consequences. A band of vagabond secessionists for a tong time kept the premidm from fifty to a hundred per cent higher than it ought to have been, and an opposite but similarly un- icrupulous party are ready to run it down and up again. Such fluctuations as the currency has undergone have fesulted in nothing but loss to the people, as the high prices for all the necessarics as well as the luxuries of life have abundantly testified. Even now these inordi- ate prices are slow to recede, and retailers in particular fomand enormous profits, while tho hotels and the better slass of rostaurauts are an outrage upon the public in theirexooesive charges, most of them not having abated ‘fraction of their former bigh prices. They saw and profited by the rise of gold, but, now that it has fallon, they “don’t sce it.) Perhaps they think themselves * philosophera, and believe that we are:passing between two. ‘extremes, but that tho midium ‘hag not yét been found. Nevertheless, reduced pricos, wholesale and retail, are demanded; for at present they are far higher in gold than they have ever been before. “Provisions are’ from: tixty to cighty per cent higher in the wholesale market tow than#key wore in the autuma of 1363, when the Pregalum ruled near 130, and it is estimated: that bread- ‘tui Aro about forty per cent higher, and in the retail business prices are from sixty to.a hundred per cent . The time is not remote, ‘however, when pro- luce, tike Captain Scott's coon, will have to come down, Foreign exchange'continues firm but inactive, owing te parties deferring remittances tn anticipation of lower tated. “Bankers ask 100% 110 for tholr sixty day bills; but trangactions occasionally take place at 4 a iy reocasion. Short sight bills are quoted at 110% a %. Produce bills are scarce, owing to the Mmited exports going forward. Money has been easy to-day at 5 a 6 per cent, with fowor transactions at six than at five. The artificial stringency sought to be produced By the bears has failed of ite offect, and the reduced subscriptions tu the seven- thirty loan, consequent in part upon the overloading of the sub-agents last week, are conducive to still greater ease. Commercial paper of the best grado is taken at 6 8 por cont; but the volume of business in the discount line is very limited. ‘The stockholders of the New York and New Haven Railroad Company held their annual meeting on Thurs- day at Now Haven, pursuant to adjournment. Only about seven thousand of the thirty-six thousand shares Were represented at the meeting, so that the attendance was unusually slim. As there is now a falr prospect of offecting a sottiement with a large proportion of th holders of the spurious stock issued by Robert Schuyler, Im connection with the fact that for the last two years dividends amounting to about nine per cent per annum have beon made, the opposition heretofore manifested to the present Board of Managers has been entirely with- drawn, a6 shown by their unanimous re-election. + On motion of President Carhart, General Ely A. Elliott, of Clinton, Conn., occupied the chair, and, after the sual preliminary proceedings, the following resolutions, offered by Captain'John Gould, of Fairfield, were unani- mously adopved;— Resolved, That the resolution passed by the Board of Directors October 24, 1863, proposing a compromise with the holders of the so-called spurious stock, claimed un der dulont certificates issued by Robert Schnyl (giving one sharo of genuine stock for two shares of ‘the sSpurious-stock) is just jp ils conception, and is hereby ved by this imecting. ‘od, That the Dicey taken by the Directors from octeont term of the Supreme Court for the city and county of New York to the Court of Appeais for Gnal m, in the matter of the spurious stock still unadjustod, is also approved by this meeting. The unadjusted spurious stock amounts to about $300,000 After reappointing Mr. Honry White auditor for the enauing year the meeting adjourned. S@ock Exchange. ‘Tnunspay, May 18—10:00 A.
