8 zat “MOBILE. CONTINUED FROM FIRST PACE. jwankeo's deck oan be seen, but but when s working party appear they are fired upen from Spanieh Fort and are som pelléd to retire. Several officers say that the Osage tw a perfect wreck, and cannot be repaired if raised. BURIAL OF THR DEAD. ‘The four sailors killed on the Osage were buried this Bfernoon in Daphne churchyard, in the quiet village of Bolywood, about one mile and a half from the bay, on the road leading from Stark's Landing. ‘The officers and grew of the Osage and Milwaukee were present, and the Bavy gonerallly was represented by officers and seamen who assembled out of respect to pay the last solenn rites to the poor fellows who go horribly lost their lives. Their Dodies were mangled in a shocking manner. DEFORIPTION OF THE MILWAUKEE AXD O84G8 ‘The Milwaukee was one of the finest Monitors ever Bells, «was nearly twice the size of the original , had two turret, one of which worked by steam. her sino she drew very little water. he waa built at ‘The Osage was a one turreted ‘turtle backed” Monitor, Bailt up the Mississippi. Her wheel was located in the centre, She carried an eleven inch rifle, and was very formidable, On one occasion, in an engagement on the Mississippi with a rebel battery, about eighteen monthsego, the Osage was in the centre of five or six’ p.clada, The enemy, believing her to be simply atin a ihe ory Qentred thelr fire upon her ap she Pissed; when tha Gangs Soolly sacuered directly in frou: ‘@P Wie Daltery and soon silenced it. In another engage- Moat-on the Mississippi, the Osage accidentally grounded and was left as useless, having ‘broken her back.” (She was afterwards raised and rebuilt as strong as ever, 54 sent to Mobile Bay. The tron-clads im line responded tothe enemy’s fre, and scveral shells burst directly over the fort. WOFPLIES AND TROOPS GENT FROM MOBILE TO SPANISH FORT. Last night thé enemy reinforced the rebel garrison at Spanish Fort. Seven of their transports can be seen this morning beyond it, The force now estimated in the fort ts between six” and seven thousand men. A rumor pegdhied tho flect to-day that Forrest had arrived at Blake. A th» whole of his command. It ja also stated that thirty-pounder Parrotts ‘have been added to. the ens of Spavish Fort: THE REBT. IRON-OLADS AND GUNBOATS.IN OUR FEONT, " ‘Frow present appearouces there are, prospects of an sarly naval engegewent, The rebel ram Nashville and Punboais Tuscaloosa, Morgan and Natches are now lying tm Blakeley river, near Fort Huger, with the evident in- Sention of giving battle to our Monitors; and this afternoon the ram Huntsville was towed below Fort Huger in the rection of Spanish Fort. More of the enomy’s war ves- gels are supposed to be beyond them on their way from Mobile. »Theso vessels are all provided with guns of heavy cali- bre, come of them, itis said, of the best English man- facture. The rebel gunboats have been shelling the ‘woods beyond Spanish Fort all day. The ram Nashville resembles the Tennessee, and is said te be fully as powerful. The Huntsville is aiso aformida- ‘Wie iron-clad. ‘WHAT OUR NAVY HAS DONE. While the army has been investing Spanish Fort by Aand the navy has not becn idle. The loss of the Orage ‘end Milwaukee is unfortunate, but could not possibly be BVoided. Up to tho time of those disasters there was no @pposition to the advance of the navy. The country on each side of the bay was cleared of rebels by the shells from the flect, and the batteries at Dog river bar silenced. Yesterday a battery on the west bank opened fire upon the Cincinnati, Itasca and Sciota The vessels replied fand Kept up a terrific fire, which compelled the rebels to @vacuate. This morning the euemy returned and com- menced firing on the Scioia, when a few shells from the fatter again compelled the enemy to retire. WORPEDORS AND FIRE RAYTS—THE DANGERS OF NAVIGATING MOBILE BAY. Last night the cnemy sent two torpedoes floating down fhe bay. They passed close to the Octorara, but wore picked up by a small boat without exploding. One was eo picked up while floating near the transport Kate Dale. A day or two ago a dark object was seen floating on the water some distance ahead of the Scioia. She imme- Gately slipped her anchor and steamed to tho spot, when {8 was discovered to be s large log. Returning to her ‘anchorage, while picking up the buoy, she wound a tor- {pedo around her propeller with the chain. It fortunately G4 not explode. There is no doubt that the torpedo had been fastened on the chain during the little while that she was absont. From the torpedo were taken forty- five pounds of powder. It was then sent on board the Admiral’s flagship Stockdale. While qne of the sailors ‘was examining it the cap exploded, and, there still being Seonsiderable quantity of powder in it, one of the poor fellow's arms was blown nearly off, A day or two previous to this accident the Metacomet picket up a floating torpedo, not more than ten yards from her bow. Seventy-five pounds of powder were taken from it. Some of the torpedoes are simply beer barrels, covered ‘with pitch and filled with powder, with percussion fuses @t the heads and mdes, and slow matches leading from ene fuse to the other. Boats have been sent out every day for the purpose of @ragging the obannel for torpedoes, and a large number havo thus been discovered and rendered harmless. On Wednesday evening the flagsh!p Stockdalo signalled Ge the fleet “Look out for fire rafta.” Information had Been received that the enemy were preparing torpedo Deets and fire rafts to send down to our vesscis. SPANISH PORT, MOBILE, AND ITs DEFENCES. Bpanieh Fort ie an irregular bastioned work, with forti- Meations five miles in length, commencing at D'O).ve's reek and running to Minctia bay. It was built by Do Peto, in 1640. The guns are in embrasures; their num- ber ie variosly estimated. Among them are three or four seven and eight in the remainder are mostly Geld pieces. The main defence of Mobile is at this point. From the land side; on the right of Spanish Fort, are Swo bastions, encircled with rife pits, cheveaua-de frite, frenches and torpedocs. The fortifications on tbe ex- frome right are said to be covered by the works on the toh of Blakeley. Fpanish Fort, from the bay, rerombles the bottom of a Shoe. Pinto Island, to the right, covers Spanish river @nd commands Christian Pass. Boyond Spanish Fort, to the left, and on the opposite shore of Minetta bay, ina fort mounting beavy guns. There are aleo water batteries @8 ach aide of the bay. On ono of them is mounted goven-inch Brooks rifle. Mobile bay, beyond Blakeley river bar, is Ollod with borpedocs. A large number of torpedoes, refugece and deserters state, aro also buried in the earth in front of Spanish Fort, near the revo! rifle pita Forte Huger, Bradley, Tracy, Battery Gladden, Spanish River battery, Blakeley, and other rebel strongholds, are in front and to the left of us.
