FINANCIAL AND. COMMERCIAL. oe * Fuupay, April 7—6 P.M «he gold market has been depressed toway bythe news of Sheridan's sudeessful attack upon the retreating army of Lee, as also the report that the laiter had been cornered and compelled to surrender with his entire force, Late in the afternoon, however, it transpired that this was at least premature, and had its origin ‘n the capiure of General Custis Lee, upon which, the price recovered to within three quarters of one per cent of the op ning price, Cash gold 1s more abundant, but the market is slow to yield, The speculative fecling w atthe same time tame, as the stirring events which are following each other in rapid suecession hold the market in sus- pense. These had been discounted in the gokd room for more than a week before the evacuation of Richmond and Petersburg; but even the most sanguine of the bears hardly looked forward to such a series of spiondid and decisive victories for the Union arms within so short a space of time, They discounted what they regarded only as poasible contingencies, and which now stand out fas great historical realities, The scene is changed and our Ginaneial prospects have improved in proportion to the dwindling down of the rebellion, Henceforward the price of gold will be regulated more by the law of legitimate supply and demand and the condition of the public finances than dy military success or defeat; but those who look for an end of our fiscal troubles with the close of the war will eventually find that they have greatly miscalculated, and that with peace the gravity of tif financia! question will first begin to be properly appreciated, and that gold will long con- fénue one of the most sensitive commodities that can be Bought and ‘sold with greenbucks, The quotations ‘The stock market contiues active and in the ascendant, the speculative feeling being very strong. At the first board Erie wag 4}¢ higher than at the close of the second board yesterday, New York Contral 4%, Michigan South- ern 2%, Fort Wayne 1%, Hudson River 3%, Cleveland and Pitteburg 2, Rock Island 2%, Cumberland 34. Northwestern was 1}¢ lower. Governments were steady. After the call and at the open board at one o'clock prices advanced 14; a 354 per cont on the New York roads; but the extreme advance was not sustained at the second session of the regular board, at the close of which Erio was 3 higher that at the first board; New York Central 1, Michigan Central 1, Michigan Southern 3g, Reading %, Northwestern 1}, Cleveland and Pittsburg 34, Cumberland 13%, iinois Central was % lower, Hudson 1, Fort Wayne 3, Rock Island 4. Government securi- ties were firm. Coupon five-twenties advanced %. At the open board at haif-past three there was a general re- cevery of prices. New York Central closed at 9814, Erie YOM a %, Reading 103%, Michigan Southern 63%, Hud- een River 101%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 67%, Rock Island 93}, Cumberland 41%. The bull movement in stooks is being assisted by a large number of outside speculators anxious to profit by it, and the rise has been #0 sharp and sudden that {t has astonished the bears, who find their former profits melting away rapidly wnder the process. Thus far the movement has gained strongth with its progress, us was to be expected, in view of the vulnerable condition of the market, and there is no symptom of its forve being nearly expended. Some reaction will doubtless soon be experienced; but from pre:ent appearances it will be only pro; to a further rise. Then will come the pe of war, the bears will again make themselves ‘The supply of money continues abundant at 6 47 per cont on eall. There is very little activity in the discount ne, and firet class commercial paper Js quoted at 8 a 10 orcent. It is a matter of necessity on the part of the overnment to keep the money market easy in order to «old disturbance of the price of its securities and sub- ortptions to the seven-thirty loan; but its requirements are 90. pressing that i will probably be soon compelled to roduce its balances with the national banks, and this will diminish, of course, the surplus of loanable funds now on the market. Foreign exchange §has been firmer to-day under a (e- mand for to-morrow’s steamer. Leading drawers say tbat they are adyised of the intended shipment of con- siderable parcels of five-twenties which may be expected bére very soon, It is known that orders for these bonds ‘ave been sent from this side under limitations; but there are parties here ready to absorb any amount that may be geturned, The immodiate effect will tell upon gold rather B Mich Central RR 101 Cleve & Pitt RR, 6634 000 Mich Suh RR ax 50000 Ohio & Miss cer shs Canton Uo 60 Cumb (oul pref. .
