FINANCIAL. AND COMMERCIAL. Satumpay, March 5-6 P.M. ‘There was a further rally in the gold market thie morn. ing from the extreme depression of th: past weck; but the “bears,” who have been pre.ipitating the fall and do. ing their best to create a goueral fuan ial and commer- cial panic, fought hard against it, These mon are still largely “‘short” of both guld and stocks, including gov ‘ernments, the markets never probably having been more oversold than at present, Those who think that the de cline in gold from 234%, im January last, to 14734 yesterday—a lower point than it has touched since January, 1863—was. the result’ of natural causes are mistaken, It was as much tho result of speculation as the rise to 285 in July, 1864; and those | out of our mili ary who profited by it made as much cay tary mecessos as they formerly did out of our reverses and gold bill legisiativa, With the capture of the Southern seaports and tho victorious march of Sher- man there was undoubted reason for a consid- erable decline in gold; but had it not been that all who wore before interested in putting tt-up suddenly turned and operated in the opposite direc- tion, the decline would not have been nearly so heavy, and the country and the government would have been spared the evil consequences of a sudden and excessive contraction of market values, The decline tn national securities was very considerable on Monday and Tuesday; | but they subsequently partially recovered. The gold | Dearing sixes are still, however, about'six por cent lower than they were on the first of March, and tlie subscrip- tions to the sevon-thirty loan have been correspond- ingly afficted. But for the efforts of frivnds of the government thore 1s good reason to believe that both ‘gold and national’securities would bnve sunk still lower; for some of the most. active and powerful “‘bears”’ in the gold markot,'it has transpired, were largely ‘‘short’ of governments, The more they succeeded in putting gold down the lower gold bonds were likely to go, and the more both declined the better for them- Belves and the worse for every ono else. It would have been better for the government to have lost a train of army supply wagons than that these ‘bears’ in gold and national securities should have carried out their designs as they have been doing during tho past fortnight; and they have done more harm than if they had becn active rebels in arms, and are consequently entitled to equal respect with gue- rillas and. bushwackers, That protentiously loyal men should have been numbered among such shows the-hol- lowness of their pretensions. The gold quotations dur- ing the day were:— 155% 1ST 115056 The extromo prices since the commencement of 1863 havo been as follows:— 1863. ry Higieit, Leet. 60% 13355 186 November 260 21655 December.....248 2115, 29436 198 December, 1864.
