FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘Tonspay, Feb, 23—6 P. M. ‘There was a show of speculative feeling at the first board, and quotations were well maintained. Nominally such firms as the one we refer to do a purely commission business, but virtually they are active speculators. Various rumors were afloat to-day—among others, the despate, of diplomatic ayents from the rebel government to France, pointing to the posst- biiity of French recognition of the confederacy, tho detachment of a large force from Lee’s army to rein- force Hardee and others, who are expected to resist the progress of Sherman; and, in the absence of nows from the latter, every day’s suspense affords so much addi- tional room for speculation. The natural tendency of tho market is downward; but the force of opinion and doubts as to tho future counteract it to a great extent, In these are, of course, involved considerations with regard to the national debt, the inflation of the currency and other influences, imme- diate and remote.
