2 nS $$$ $$ rr FINANCIAL AND commenciat. | Wenxespay, Jan, 11—6 P, M. The stock market was dull, and the speculative feel ing weak, at the fit bédra. ‘The closing quotati showed the following varisiions from those of yest Gay's second board:—Erie declined 44, Mivhigen 3%, Michigan Southern 34, Chicago and Nore %, New York Central 34, Mariposa 2%. Hudson River advanced 134, Cleveland and Pitsburg 3;. ‘Rock Island was steady, Government eecurities were firm. Coupon five-twenties ‘of the new issue were aclive at an advance of }¢ a 34. Ten-forties were steady at 102!4. Small amounts of sixes, 1881, sold at 21196 « 11134. At the open board at one o’clock the general list was barely steady, and Northwestern and Mariposa were lower, At the secoud regular board the market « washeavy.’ Erie was % lower than fm the morning, | Hudson River 34, Reading 3, Michigan Central 34, Fort Wayne ¥, Michigan Southern 34, Chicago and North- western %, preferred 13g, Rook Islend” 4, Mariposa 1%. Cleveland and Pittsburg advanced 4%. Government secu- rities were steady, the chief activity being in five-twen- ties’ Sixes of 1881 advanced { a 3, five-twenties { a 44. Atthe open board at half-past three the market ‘wad a shado lower, with a drooping tendency. The clos- ing quotations were:—New York Central 116, Erie 8354, ‘Hudson River 108, Michigan Southern 727%, Clovelan and Pittsburg 95, Northwestern 3844, Fort Wayne 9994, Cumberiand Coal 44%, Quicksilver 97};, Mariposa 10. ‘The bear interest in Erie ts still strong, and there is considerable dissatisfaction among the opposite party with the manner in which it is supposed a certain large portion of the now stock authorized under the legislative ‘ect of 1864, and hypothecated by the company, is being used to depress the market. If the suppositions are cor rect, the transaction is of a very questionable character; and, although similar strategy has beon displayed before in Wall street, it is none the more justifiable on thet ac- count. The company is, however, open to criticism for exposing itself to such 4 contingoucy as the one referred to, which has been the subject of street talk for some ays pas!. ‘Phe gold market showed a further cons ble loss of strength to-day, thus verifying onr prediction; and it closed heavy ata decline of foar per cent a the opens ing quotat day. The money market was c1ser to-day for & week past, and there was s surplus of cap tal offer ing in some quartors at seven percent. The Treasury is ‘understood to be paying out cor ai six per cent notes rapiily, in place of the five per cent notes areepted in payment of the lato subcer'ptions to the ten-forty joan, and funds are gradually returning to the financial cen- tres from tho interior, and especially the West. Excep- tional transactions were had in the afternoon at six per Cent in large amounts on government securitivs. First class commercial paper continues to rate at $210 Per cent, but the discount line is inactive. Foreign exchange is inactive at 1094 a 109% for bankers’ sterling at sixty days, andj1103¢ a 11044 at three. According to an ofliclal statement just issued by the Treasury, the amount of legal tender n: in circulation on tho last day of the year was $650,254,988, or $5,754,- 871 less than on the last day of October, The figures are as follows :— United States notes, fan it has been outstanding... $546,288 United States ol outatanding. 452,612,281 — 433,160,560 One year, five eo notes, ' outita:d’ng ves 41,325,568 ‘Two yonr tiv por cent notes out etanding....... 13,981,031 Two year five per cent notes oul- standing (ooupon)........ +134 80,008,450 ———-— 105, 615, Three years compound interest notes out- i caeceeseces MUL479,470 Amount outstandiny December 31, 1864. ... 650,264,958 Amount outstanding Octover 31, 1864... 656,000,359 case s'nee October 31, 1864. $6,754,371 GEORGE HARRINGTON, Assistant Secretary. ‘On roferring, however, to the statemont of the public debt, dated October 31, wo canuot roconcile it with the above, The currency issues then outstanding, as officially described, were: — . Two biunders, however, occurred in the statement; one in addition and the olber in subtraction, which, when allowed for, made the total circulation $683,047,201, ‘an increase of more than six millions. The cause of the present discrepancy is to be found fn the omission of the fractional currency, and the Treasury uotes on which intercet ha: ceased, from the statement. Perhaps Mr. Harrington thinks these not worth mentioving; but thelr omission amounts io an inaccuracy. Notice was given in the Senate at Albany to-day of a Dill to release the New York Central Roilroad Company from the two cents per mile limitation rate for passen- gers. Similar action bas been taken by other companies in other States; but notwithstanding the depreciated con- dition of the currency, neither politicians nor the public fre in favor of granting the privilege applied for; and considering the indifference shown by railroad companies in general to the comfort and safety of their passengers this ix uot eurprixing. Railroad travelling in thix coun try is one of the great miseries and dangers of lite, and #0 long as companies show more disposition to pay dividends than to keep their ronds in repair or make improvements calculated to increase the safety and diminish the discomfort attending it, the people have no inducement to pay higher rates than those already provided by law. ‘The bill for the consolidation of the Hudson River and Harlom Railroads was introduced in the Assembly to-day. Its chief provisions are said to be that the terms of con- Bolidation shall be fixed by the board of directors of the two companies, and shall be ratified by them and not by the stockholders; and in case any stockholder of either of the two roads shall refuse to accept of the consolidated stock, the board of direction shall have power to appoint appraisers to fix the value of the old stock belonging to the recusant stockholder, and the award of such appraiser shall be final. This pro gramme reads like 2 sequel to the history of the Harlem “corner,"’ and every word is suggestive of Wail street. To those who know the history of the two roads during the Last year this bill comes as a matter of course. ‘The subscriptions to the seven-thirty loan received at the First National Bank to-day amounted to $252,000.
