< mupated Lienry Fisuer 5) CHARTER ELECTION. (adifference in Reference to the Oeming Election. Cho Controversy in the Several Alder- manic Districts. Whe Are Up fer Councilmen and Scheel @fficers. S@AMBS OF CANDIDATES, ac., aa, ae. During the late Preeidential canvass ft was constantly @eerted and reiterated by the daily press, until the Balement assumed a chronic form, shat the contest was ame Of ibe most exciting and was absorbing the atte.tios #f the citizens of this metropolis to # greater extent than Bat of any canvass sioce the election of Jackson. Ad- aitting that to be true, the public must have become parfeited with political affairs; for the very reverse 0, Bas now exisis in reference to the coming charter elec, son, We doubt if there has been a municipal election Bis metropolis, ence i was incorporated as acity, which etracis 60 little aticntion as iat which we are now pas. Mag tbrough. The ward peliticians are quarrelling and wrangling with each other, letters of crimimation and @ecrimination are written and published, replies and eountercharges arelalso spread before the public; proba- ly not one out of a thousand reads them, and even a Bapority of those Wink of them only while they are feeding. Others may glance at the headings, throw the paper one side with a smile, and turn thelr altention to Weir stocks or merchandise, while the balance of our people psy no attention so the letters or even know of the wzistence of such documents. In fact, this canvass for wunicipsl officers is entirely in the bands of the coruor grocery politicians and a few aspirants for position. The general public outside of these classes pay no more atten- Won to it than they would if the election was to be beld fm San Francisco, or even on the Feejee Islands, ingiead of Blew York city, where their property and interests are all located. ‘The election takes place next Tuesday; but no prepara. Bon bas been made to secure a better class or a higher pone:! set of oficials that amounts to anything. We have, bo be sure, in several instances, caodidates announced as feform candidates, but thoy are geuerally worse Bhan the present sei, or else are put forward io this way, and run under circumstances which bid fair to efeat the best candidates nominated in the regolar or- Banizations, and elect the worse, Under this state of Biaire, if the people secure as good representatives in the ditlerent departments of the city government as they mow have, they may consider themselves exceedingly Jertunate, The trouble seems to be that the would-be pefor mers never learn anytuing by expersence. They rua fm the sume old ruts year after year. A movement may be staried with the best of intentions and purest of mo. @tves; but it hardly gets organized before desigoing meo @btalo control, who turn the reform from one for the eneft of the city to that of ejecting a set of men from @@ice and piacing séme deleaied abd disappointed ap;)li- ants in their plate, who are in reality worse than those Blready cocupying.sbose pasitious. It, in other words, be- pemcs a velicle for played out politicians to seoure an en- @orsemo.t which will galvanize their past misdeeds and pecure what ibey imagime will give them ap air of respectability, and perhaps furnish the long coveted Bpportunity to Ol their pockets with the rich Spoils of the city covernment. This is the ebar scter of ihe spermocic reorm movements fm this sily in (be past, og peli as those of the preeent, and Bb likely to be for all time to come, or at least vatil oar citizens and taxpayers ceage fi saad day Alter the almighty-doila?; Eid iupm their attention to the “government of the city with as much energy as they gow exhibit in accumulatitg property, addjog to their Geposits in banks, increasing their display in thelr fetal mansions cr gay equipages im the drives of the Park. From prezent indications there 1s no pros- pect of this during the present generation at least. Shore is no prospect of the political milienaium visiting @s in this metropulis this year; and those who bave been preparing thoir robes for such an cecasion may as weil fm )iiale the exaipple of the Millerites a few years ago, and pack them away for somo hoped for occasion far of in fhe distant future, when Duman nature ceases to be what i bas been from the creation down to the present ume. THE CONTEST FOR ALDERMEW, The ward politicians iu one half of the wards of this @ity beve been, during the past two weeks, trying to wake tbe public belleve that they are men of import- ance. They bave suceseded, it im true, in parading thelr fecalicies with posters @muouncing that Mr. Someb:dy Bas been nominated for Alderman by a convertion, of wbich James Any body, Esq, was presidevt; Duniel No. Dody vice president; Patrick Flourtshbody secretary; Job Slipperywody treasurer. T think there ought to be po question on this subject. will state the facts in regard to my ward—the Tenth. as member of the Board of Councijmen from that ward, I, early in the yoar, introduced in my Board an ordinance Providing additional election districts for the Tenth ward. Jbis ordinance passed the Board of Coun Cilmen *on the 12th day of 1864, ana was received in tho ard of Aldermen the Succeeding day. When it is remembered that Alderman Hardy te the Jaw momber of the Doard of Alderinen, and the leader Of that brapch of she Common Counal), it is not difficult to place the responsibility where it properly belongs It was {dle to pass ordivances in the Board of Counell- men crevting additional election districta when Alder- man siood ready im the Board of aldermen to bave ‘Feierred'to rhe Commities on Ordinances and there strangle them The great difficulty aj to be that Hardy was onnosad to croatia the pgltr patronage which the new districts woud furo! 4 endian and for thts conteuptibie motive, or other w: reason, Vert Useteres to defeat every effort % mite $2. aa ‘be if syentioiaes districts, by which aout wards. ‘tha: ‘ted from other Iu the face of these facts, it ts certainly a very bold undertaking for Haray to aitempt to avoid the solemn responsibility which rests upon bim Respect fully, SAMUEL T.
