A couple of bours or so after the. departure of the wteamer Columbia for your port, last Saturday, the steamer Zephyr, formerly the Frances, arrived from the imperial troops took possession of Matamoros on ‘ho 26th of September without shedding a crop of bined. ‘Tho editor of the Galveston News writes to that paper on Cho 27in end 29th (the editor writes from Brownsville, where he then was), that cm the eveaing @f the 26th Cortina surrendered formally and voluntarily to the imperialiss Genoral ° Mejia, who was received by Governor Cortina on the baloony ef the palace, and embraced by him in presence of Whe pevple Cortina immediately afterwards signed in due form bis recognition of the empire, swcaring obedi- evce and revouncing all furtber opposition, Can: jert Matamoros seme tbree = hundred = men. acd crossed into Tex Colonet Ford received Canales’ men sur:endered their arms to Ford. Tt is expected that they will enrol themselves in his ranks and be joined to the troops of Benuydes. Since whe occupation of Matamoros by the imperialists tho business and traffic between there and Brownsville have recovered an activity uskuown fur a long time. Goods from Bagdad to Matamoros pass up without hindrance. The United States blockading fleet at Galveston on We Mth, consisted of four gunboats and several trans. ports, if my memory serves me rightly, the course of Cortina, ee above narrated, was predicted by me in the letter which went by the Roanoke; a prediction easily made, for { had been assured by a person intimately sequalnted with Cortina for many years, tbat notwitbstand the bluster of that ovisy leader, ne was secretly in @ the empire, and would embrace that system ut the Srai good opportunity. If the above aews be correct, as A wink it is, the moment has come for Corttva to throw Off the mask. But there is one discrepancy which must Be noticed. ‘There are two Cortinas, brothers. Tho younger was ap- Pointed Governor of Mataimoras by the elder, who was Feported to beve fied, aud 1 this case tho Cortina above eprken of must be the younger, which I thisk probable, Because he is spoken of as Governor Cortiva, while oo mention is made of the other. Tbis point will be cleared ap by the arrival of the Spacish mail steamer next week from Vera crix in the mouptime, I ibick we need baye ‘Be doubt of the occupation of Mataimorcs by Mejia.
