Horace Greeley, Mhan Alien and others addressed the meeting. Patriotic songs were sung, and the proceedings were of " (he most entnustastio character | A match of base bail for the championship was played yesterday by the Atlantic and Musual clubs, and atiract- the Atlantic, the ecore etanding twenty-one to sixteen. The radical changes in gold and the uncertainty with regar@ to the future rendered commercial matters wholly unsettied yesterday, aud in view of the constant fuctuations the merchants were io a quandary what to do. Everything was uusettied, end scarcely any buyers could be found for any description of merchandise, ex- cept at a great reduction in prices. Some holders were disposed to realize; but the prices offered generally bad the effect of inducing them to hold off until the future shall have sasumed a more tangible shape. The impression seems to be geining pos session of the public mind that the war is Boon to be ended. The great successes of Sherman and Farragut, and the tenacity with which Grant maintains bis position, it ia argued, must sooo re- sult in the complete overthrow of the rebellion, and, as opinions with regard to the probable commercial status thereafter vary riwly, opinions with regard to pre- sent values are equally adverse. Now which are the States that he will probably carry? They are New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Tilinois. Thos States were all carried against the administration in 1862, on a platform pre- cisely like that which McClellan lays down for himself in bis letter of acceptance. Those six States are all that he wants to elect him. Ac- cording, then, to Greeley’s admission, Genera! McClellan is to be our next President. The masses believe that Mr. Linogin and his Cabinet are responsible for the failure of General McClellan’s Peninsular campaign. Even a large portion of the republican party look upon Mr. Lincoln as the greatest failure of the age, not only in a military point of view, but as astatesman. We therefore agree with Greeley that “Little Mac,” in repudiating the Chicago platform and making a platform for himself, has made his oes good for carrying six States. They are sufficient to place him in the White House. Poor Greeley having thus given up the contest at the outset and shown the white feather, he should at once resign his position on the Lincoln electoral ticket. MAILS FOR THE PACIFIC. uly day the The Next Great Battle in Vi nis. Gen. Grant's campaign from the Rapidan to Petersburg and Sherman’s advance in Georgia are feats of arms as great as any of the achieve- ments of Napoleon the First. In both cases there were vast obsiacles to overcome, and a daring and determined foe to conquer. But these successes will be eclipsed by the fearful contest uow preparing in Virginia, and which mustere long take place. Feeling that their cause is lost uniegs they gain a victory, the Tebels are concentrating every available man under command of Lee. Driven from so many places lately, they find a great many soldiers free to joiu their forces in Virginia, and there they will strike the blow which, if won, may give their ill-fated rebellion a short extension of life, or, if lost, r ust ruin them totally. Un- derstanding this, the rebels will make every effort, strain every nerve, to render the next battle in Virginia the most stupendous conflict the world ever witnessed. + Our administration is fully alive to the im- portance of the impending battle, and rein- forcements are being sent to General Grant with the utmost despatch. Every provision is made to insure that success which we confi- deatly expect, and which shall rid us of pestilential rebellion, which has cost such ex- penditure of life and treasure, and given our enemies a chance to insult the digaity of our government. But let success attend our arms in this last struggle, as we feel sure it will, and we shall then be free to command from the world that respect which is our due, while we assume our true rank at the head of the most powerful vatious of the earth. The battle which must soon take place between the North and South will rank as the most dread‘ul in the apnals of history, and will mark the tura- ing/point in the destiny of this great republic, ton the The steamship Costa Rica, Captain Tinklepaugh, will leave thie port this day for Aspinwall. ‘The mails for Central America and the South Pacific will close at balf-past ten o’clock this morning.
