Pasveovers by the Nashville train that the rebel uerel Wheeler, with bis entire force, appeared at the Rend of the Cumberiand river, three miles below Gaila- ‘iu, captured & company of Union troops, and was at- Gompting to cross the river this morning for an advance epon Galatia, Wheelse’s force is variously estimated at from five ch usand to twelve thousand, The former number is probably nearly correct. . A roport bas reached Cave City, Ky., that the colonel eommand og tue Union forces at Gallatin ordered the depot to be buraed, as it was without the range of bis lines. Jessey’s gang of guerilias went into Ghent, Ky., last night, after huving shot thirteen negroes in the suburbs. the Veway (Iudiaga) Home Guard shelled the rebels out ‘of Ghens (vom the opposite side of the river. Juke Uennett’s equad of seventeen guerillas went into Owevsboro, Ky., ou Saturday afternoon, and captured ‘and shot Captain Walterg, of the Third Keutucky cavalry. “hey cao captured ten negro soldiers, seven of whom ot, The tres others escaped and concealed them. .ves on the wharf boat, The rebels set the boat on fire, ond then left, The citizens afterwards extinguished the fiames dwenty guerillas, under Captain Pratt, attacked Tay loreville, Ky., on Suuday night, and were repuised by Jerson with lweaty bome guards. Last Tuesday tho guerillas under Dupaster robbed David Honry’s house, near Bradbury. They shot Mr, Beary, ond afterwards demolished his furniture, A Nasnvintz, Auguat 31, 1864. ‘(he attacking forve at Lebanon numbered twenty men, Geveral Milliken was held for hours, but was seleased. ‘Ho wre wt Callatin Jost vight. Accounts are conflicting regarding the number of Wheeler's force, The highest estimate is six thousand, ‘Wheeler's main body is iv the vicinity of Decherd and ‘Tullahorn, threatening the railroad bridges at Eik and Mack rivers. He bas undoubtedly divided bis force, with cho ultimate view of crossing into Keatacky. Last night two bundred and fifty of Wheeler’s me drove in Van Cleve’s scouts at Woodbury. A rebel foree was aiso veyen miles east of Duck river bridg The robol force at Woodbury was under DeBrill, whose ‘Urigade vccapied McMinnville on the evening of the 29th. A tolcrram from the commanding officer at Duck river reports that at seven o'clock yesterday eveniag two shousand five hundred rebels were advancing upon the bridge by the Manchester and Wartrace road. A new and convenient pien tor the distribution of mails is about to be introduced tnto our postal system, the reeuit of whieh Will bo a decided gain to the public in the time occupied in transmitting and delivering. The @elay bitherto required for the work of aegorting the mail matter, will be obviated in a great measure by hav- ing the distributions now doze at this and otber offices, hereefter performed in the cars by clerks detailed epe- claliy for that purpose, and thus letters aud papers can be taken at alater‘hour, The mails coming to this city or any other station will be partly distributed on arriving, and the time usually employed for that purpose saved the public. The matter Intended either for city delivery or tor distribution at the boxes, or to be given out at the “goveral delivery,”? will be carefully clagsifed on the rouie, thus caabling merchants and others to get their letters moch earlier than beretofore. Ihe matter now detained here und elsewhere to be assorted, will hereat- ter be sent forward iu bulk, the clerks on the cara at- tonding to the assorting. ‘Thus in this and other modes, tho numerous vexatious delays required by our present tal system will be rendered uanecessary. Potnencw pla will be first tried on the New York aad wi hington route; bat a little time must elapse before the reform can be putin operation, Much preparation is to be made: cars adapted to the work are to be finished, though it is understood some of them are now vearly ready; and many changes are essential to the success of the plan, which will be perfected by the aid of experience. ‘The business community will andoubicdly findythe new arrangomont = troporsants Sooneninedasion aud it will ‘add mvob to the efficiency of our postal cervice. In connection with this subject it ts well to state that It is expected the postal money order system will go into effect some timo next month, probably on the Ist. Mr. G.
