Butler is a bag of wind; that Fremont is of no earthly ac- count; and that, as for Gen. Grant, the Blair family have made it all right between him and Old Abe, But, conceding all this, it is still difficult to believe that Chase men, Banks men. Butler men, Fremont men and Grant men will chime in with the proposition to give the coun: try four years more of the blunders, the cruel jokes, the incongruities, imbecilities, waste ful corruptions and slops and shoddy of the present administration. We are inclined to the opposite opinion—that all the anti-Lincoln elements represented in the Convention will, by a natural gravitation, rally around the standard of Gen. Grant, and that they will probably be strong enough to bring the Lincoln stage managers and scene shifters to a complete change of the pro- gramme. Failing in this, we dare say that from the anti-Lincoln men of this Balti- more gathering of office hucksters, office seekers, and political gamblers, or from the Chase men outside of the Convention, euch re- inforcements will be brought forward to Gene- ral Fremont, to say nothing of General Grant at Chicago, as will very soon make the defeat of Old Abe before the people visible to the naked eye. With or without the nomination of Grant at Chicago, the Fremont movement against Lincoln will be strong enough to play the same effective part in the canvass that was played by Van Buren against the Baltimore ' democratic nomInee of 1848. The republican delegates bound for Balti- more are already arriving, it seems, in consid- erable numbers at Washington. It may be surmised that they are dropping in to pay their respects to Old Abe, as the present and the coming man for their money, and to compare notes with Mr. Seward in reference to the party platform. Auother great battle was fought on Friday morning, Jommencing at half-past four o'clock, when General Grant made an attack on the rebel linee, and drove them within Joeir intrenchments at all points, Our forces were, at st accounts, close to the enemy tn their defences. The ght of Friday is reported as being the heaviest of the campaign. Hancock’s corps, after meeting a dos Perate resistance, succeeded in turning the enemy's Sank, ‘carrying @ portion of their main tine of Gefences, and capturing some three hundred prigon- ers, guns and colors; but they were not ablo to ‘Dring of the guns or hold the place. Thus General Grant in bis despatch says that, although the enemy was @riven within bis fortifications, we gained no material @dvantage, Other, but unofficial, reports rtate that our Toss was three thousand men in killed and wounded Lee's army ts said to be much demoralized. Desertion: ‘ere frequent and in large bodies, in one instance number. tng over five hundred mep from Georgia in one party. Immense clouds of smoke were ween at the White Bouse on Thursday, proceeding from Richmond, leaving the impression that asertous fire was going on in the rebel expital. The fact of General Lee’s sickness ts confirmed by Che reports of the wounded prisoners, who state that the rebei general fs in Richmond, sad that the army is Sommanded by Genera! Ewell. The opinion prevaks among these prisoners that this isto be the last fight for Richmond; aud they are not far astray jn the opinion, Oar news from General Butier’s department is not ‘very important, with the exception of the confirmation of previous reports that General Lee is confined to bed with Severe sickness in Richmond. Such ts the statement of Brefugeo who came toto General Butier’s lines, and ac- cords with the news received tu the Army of the Poto- tmsc. The same person states that every man and boy, without regard to age, physica! ability or nationality, is being pressed into the rebet service. ‘ We learn by way of Cairo that the rebet Genera! For- Tost was reported to be at Corinth on Friday, and that an Vtuck on General Sberman’s rear was expected. But it pears thet u large number of bis troops are deserting Yim. ‘ The Nevy Department has received {oformation of the Apture of Wiimiogten of the steamer Caledonia, which was built and registered tn Quebec tm 1863, and was a a mea, that the Baltimore delegates ‘Groppttig Ynto Washington may desire a oon- sultation with the people’s responsible Tepre- sentatives before proceeding to the renomina- tion of Lincoln. During the last week the Army of the Poto- mac has been exceedingly active, night and day. Omitting Thursday, when a violent storm suspended all active demonstrations on both sides, excepting the surrender of five hundred Georgians in = body to General Smith, there has been more or less fighting every day and every night since Sunday last, with the steady advance of General Grant from the Pamunkey to the Chickahominy. The rebels have stub- bornly contested every inch of the ground, dodging and finessing, too, in every way; but all to no purpose. Having pushed them behind their intrenchments, and having so severely pummelied and damaged them as to take all the conceit out of them, General Grant may, perbape, occupy a day or two in perfecting his arrangements for the heavy work of a regular siege, or for another flanking operation. He may either flank Jeff. Davis and all his follow- ers out of Richmond, or starve them out, or shell them out; and we sball not have long to wait before we know what course has been adopted. Richmond is now beginning to look very much like Vicksburg about this time last June. Meantime, with their carpetbags at their desks, ready for a run over the river and ona beeline for North Carolina at a moment's warn- owned by a rebel agent at Queenstown, from which port ebe satied. the Sth iusieant persons of both sexes went to the craves CONGRESS. ing, the Richmond editors think General Lee’s | of those who (o!! ia the Mexican victory of which the ; day was the auniversary, and deposited fowers and In the Senate yesterday bills for the payment of the } retrograde strategy from the Rapidan to the | wreaths theroo, ‘The day was duly _fommemorata giment of ‘ ick: i facti ili ‘i thongh generally in secret. A French frigate {s Outside, and it was rumored that Maximilian was coming. The rebel steamer Dewhigh arrived yesterday, two ‘and a baif days from Mobile, with glorious pews for the federals from Georgia and Virginia. and skill. True, they had expected that Lee would draw off General Grant into Maryland or Pennsylvania, instead of drawing him down to Richmond, through the heart of Old Vir- ginia, his army eating out the substance of the country as clean and remorselessly as a cloud of locusts. But then, as General Lee has some grand design in view in this change of his plans, the astonished yet still credulous people of Richmond, are told “It is all right—General Lee knows what he is about.” But it appears that even this reliance upon General Lee must now be abandoned, if it be true, as has been reported for several days past, and from both sides of the James river, that his late some- what hurried advance backwards from Spott- sylvania Court House to Richmond has laid him up on the sick list—a regularly used up rebel general. The Richmond Eraminer, however, having applauded so lustily the sublime wisdom of Lee's late movements, whereby be was enabled to get into Richmond ahead of Gen. Grant, can do nothing less than endorse the masterly strategy of Joe Johnston in Georgia, of the same pattern, through which the redoubtable Joe has at least got into Atlanta “.in advance of the detestable Yankees,” though there is telling bow soon he will have to leave, you know, on account of circumstances beyond his control. Jeff. Davis dies hard; but this is his death struggle, and Richmond is, indeed, his “last ditch.” With the fall of Richmond his enor- mous paper money bubble of the so-called “ Confederate States Treasary,” and bis English cotton loans, &c., will all collapse, and the confederacy itself, like a, hideous eclipse, will vanish from the face of the sun. We have this monster rebellion in a corner at last, and the means at hand to strangle it; and this time the job will be thoroughly done, The Baitimere Co; tunity a: The Presidential Convention which meets at Baltimore on Tuesday will have the oppor- tunity for a nomination which will silence all opposition, absorb all parties, and carry the Presidential election by popular acclamation; but the Convention will also be confronted by the danger of “a pomination not fit to be made,” and which, if made, will stir up and bring into violent commotion all the bad pas- sions of all the political parties and factions of the day, and, making confusion worse coen- founded than ever, will precipitate their work of ruin and amarchy upon the country.
