2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Sewpay, April 24, 1864" Notwitustacding the severe blow which the panie ast Wook gave to the newly formed bogus companies, threatening their feebie existenoe, they are afl ogait ta the Geld, and are strenuously endeavoring to convince the people that cheir-only aim and objects are to wobi Avvo capital, im Order the better to develop the mineral Tegious of the Far West; to work coal, iron aod copper tines fp various loculiti¢s, ind 10 secure the countless Mbousands of gailons of jetroicum «hich are represented &s flowing from bundreds 0! inexhaustible wells. At the @ame time they bold out promise: of large profits, ranging from two to five por cent a month, for al! the money that is invested in them; and by their eplendid exbibits on payer—which remind us of the famous water lot village and cuy maps which were @pread before the public about thirty to n—they allare many 40 aB- 8 ago raise a spirit of specvia wary pers n into the belie! that « fortune Hes withia bis grasp. There are three or four cescrij tions of mines in certain localities, that ure worked by means of concentra tion of capital, which have paid well thas far, and will, ‘nO doubt, continue to ric.ly reward ali who are tutercst- din them They are the gold mines of California, a umber of the coal mines of Pennsylvania, the coprer mines of the Lake Superior country, and, perhaps, & fow silver mines; but a urge majority ot these bow ganizations, ielyding many of those that fare based Upon Feal'y hosest intentions, will never re- componse the labor that t will be found necessary to employ to work them, and 19 the cnd they wili be aban- @oned, and those who have contributed to their forma- tion and support will be minos their Investments. A yoar or two ago a furor was raised in Canada over the discovery of gold on the Chandierre river and other #treams iu that vieinity. The fever ran high, the roads loading to the localities were lined with fortune hunters tnd gold diggers; chemists and acsayists were despatched , and some fifteen or twenty companies were immediately formed, each with thougunds of shares. and all finding ready takers. The fact that gold existed tm the region whore it wag repres:nted to have been discovered was fully proven; but the cost of procuring tt was found so hourly equal to the profit that tne work was abandoned ‘and most of the companies dissolved. . ‘The following were the quotations of stocks at the close of the past five weeks:— 26.
