While these move mets are going on among the gamblers, the members of the United States Congress, who were sent to Wasbington by thei: constituents to protect the faith and credil of the country and to look after its saiety—the former doing iu greater jeopardy than the latter— fre wastiug the hours, which at this time ure more necessary than ever before, to be devoted to devising means for the preservation of our national fiuances, in tuiking over each otber’s political Gntecedents aud prejudices, and reverting to former ac tons of political parties. The re- coipts continue remarkably light, consideriog that iniand navigation is open. Rates of (reight to San iraucjsco tend upward, as suitable vessels covtinue very scarce, and held for ex- treme prices: indeed it is difficult to induce shipowne: to go to California at all, for the reason that freight money is received there iu currency, while all disbursements must be made in gold. The war risk 0 adds (0 the cost of the voyage, and tends to render it unprofitable, especially as employment there is upoer- tain, and often unremunerative. Most of the vessels now on tbe berth are getting 50c. per foot, and clippers about to go on are held for 60c. per foot and 1c. a 134¢. por lb The Shipping List reports the following charters:— ‘wo or three ships, under 700 tons, from Chincha Isiaads to Cork, for orders toa port in tue United Kingdom, guano, at £4: & Bremen ship, 1,032 tons, from St. Joho, ar) to London, deals, 61¢.; a British bark, 530 tous, cee Newburg (oa port io Great Britain, oak timber. 358.; a schooner, 163 tons, from Trinidad, Cuba, to New York, molasses, $3 75 ander and $3 50 on deck; one, 150 tons, vo West Indies and back, $900 per month ove, 200 tons, fant $960 per month; one, 98 tous, $600 per out fiors steady, with sales of 75 bales at 23c. a 30c , ac. cording to quality. Tbe market for crude oi; was greatly excited to-day aud prices were very irregu lar, the rates varying to tne extent of 2c. a 3c. a gallon. There was an active demana for oi! on the spot, and though there were sales eariy in the day at 35c.. there were subsequent sales as high as 37 4 37',¢.; and “set- tlements” of “contracts” were done as high as 38c. The movement was wholly illegitimate, however, Some par- ties having bought up the “coutracts” for this month's delivery were endeavoring to get posaes- sion of the Dulk of the oil om baud, so that they canuot be filled. By thie moans prices bave been forced up and a very large margin es Ubiisned between the “contracts” ani! the market | price. Jt is « shrewd move on the part of the speculators. The tnarket was greatly exclted, however, and prices were merely nominal. The demand for pork at the commencement of ’Change was not not 60 active as yesterday; but the large advance in gold created great excitement, and ao active demand en- sued, when an advance of 26c. to 5Uc per bbl wes eatab- lished with little or no trouble. A pretty large business was done, chiefly on speculation, at the advanced yates, but sales were .resiricted by the firmness of sellers. Beef was im fair demand, aud prices ruled in favor of the seller. Beef hams were quiet, but beld Ormer. Bacon was in moderate demand, but the gales were generally at higher prices.
