rn AT THE ROOMS OF TUS CHAMBER COMMERCE. A woetiag of gentiomen was beld yesterday afiernoon, at tbe rooms of tbe Chamber of Commerce, 61 William street, (0 inaugurate a movement in aid of the suffering Union citizens of East Tennessee. From the facts laid bofore the meeting by Col, Taylor, from that section, Uhoee people are subjected to a degree of euflering and hardships whic certainly entities them to the sympathy and support of their fellow cttizens throughout tbe eountry. ‘Seth B. Hunt, Esq., was caifed upon to preside, and 8. A. Stevens, bsq., was appointed Secrotary. ‘The SECRETARY read the call of the meeting, after which ‘Re read a letter Trom J. 8. Brown, regretting that he could aot be present at the meeting, but ox pressing bis Fearty ‘woneurrence Mi the object for which was called, etatiug ‘Wat he was prepared ¢q contribute Yo the fund prop csed 80 We'ccllected for the benefit of those people. A letter was also read from the Provost Marsbal of ‘Esst Towmereve in answer to a jetter from Brigadier Gen era) R. Anderscu,a which be stated that the condition cof the people'there was much worse than it was repre- wenles. Vor the last four months, be said, from 40 008 to 60.000<reope bad been operating in East Ten- ‘pesse®, from 10700 to 15,000 of which were cavalry, apd Dy their occupation of the coupiry they bad consumed “the entire subgiance of the people, who were now left sentirety Westitute of the moans of enpport. Mr. TayLom, ihe representative io Congress from Fast Tepmessee, was called upon tostate to the meeting the wants of-his fellow citizens. Be said be regretted to ave to detat! the candition of hia friends in Uhat section of the country. Befire the war commenced the people ‘of Enst Tennessee wore prosperous and happy; but siace Ae rebe!lion broke out, in consequenee of the loyal attitude which (bey assamed in de’ence of the old government, desolation bad swept over the country. When the Union army drove the rebels from that part of the State it en- gendered a feeling of revenge in the hearts of the seces- swurete, and when the tide of battle again left the coun- try in the bands of the rebels the ‘spirit of retaliation was Tully aroused, avd ‘between the two contending armies East len: essee was left barren waste. Tho worst fea- ‘ture of'the whole case was that those wbo bad lived in opulence and were considered the rich men there were reduced to the same jevel with the poorest inhabitant, apd many of the latter class were compelled to subsist on raliens served out to them by the government. He appealed to the people of the North. who bad not ‘tasted tho biter cup of war, to come forward and con tribute of ther means to the relief of their Unton breth- ren who were cnvironed by a hostile and relentless foe. This was the condition of the people of Fast Tennessee— brave and loyal to the covstitution of their fathers— whose cause he bad co feebly pleaded before the wealthy and humane pe pie iew York General SrRonG, RoveRT B. Roosrvent and General Wat- rRDcR succeded Colonel Tay ior, and appealed in forcibie language to the meeting ov the necessity of contributing Wo the relief of this suifering pe pie. The fo.iowing committee was then appointed to receive contriboticns and prepare an address to the people of New York in aid of the movement, which promises to be fruitful of good results: — Joho C.
