2 INANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, pec , March 16—6 P.M. The stock market today was firm, but mos buoyant. A statement was recently published, which emanated from interested bulls, that Congress would pro- dabiy purchase the water front of the corporation and a jarge portion of the land, for the purpose of establishing a navy yard, This} like the hundreds of rumors that have been apread before the public for the purpose of in fvencing this stock, is simply ridiculous, and has no more foundation than a report that Congress was about to cs- tablisb a navy yard in the moon would have. The port of Baltimore, with the most favorable tide, cannot be entered by vessels drawing over twenty-two feet of water, and it ofteo occurs that vessels drawing nineteen feet are detained a number of days for want of a sufficient depth of water; and, besides, a bar makes out in front of the Canton Company's grounds opposite Fort McHenry, which alone would be sufficient to set at’ rest any idea of ever establishing @ navy yard at that point. The statement fad its elect, however, and the stock rose on the report. The gold market was in a bigh state of excitement to-day over the government surplus resolution, and tele grams flew thick and fast from Washington to this city, aud the wires were loaded with opinions and conjectures On the probable passage or defeat of the resolution. Those ‘who bave heretofore been considered knowing ones in the vicluity of Wall street were gatisfod that tho offect of the resolution would be to reduce the premium, and, being «ander the impression that it would eventually be adopted, ‘they quietly pat their piles on the market and took the Dest bids they could get. The consequence was a large in- crease of cash sales, and a great addition to the usual ag Gregste amount, giving to the market during most of the day a lively appearance. As will be seen by thoquota tions bolow, the preminm at the opening was 63; but by twelve o'clock it fell to 603%, from which point it took ap upward turn, bat did not get above 61}¢:— 94 o'clock A. ¥ 1X o'clock P.
