ww 2 — $a Rebel Mail Detectives at Fairfax. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. Provost MARSHAL's Orrce, Famrax Court House, Va., March 7, 1864. In your issue of the 2d ist. (Mr, F. G. Chapman's des- patch) I see (bat Colonel Deverg.ux’s railroad detectives ectzed ive trunks filled with a rebel mail, ‘The facts are these:—Mrs. Bissell, Miss Bissell and Mrs Carter and child, having two passes from the War De partment giving them permission to piss to the Army of the Potomac, came to the picket lines on the Alexandria Toad. Nov having permission for baggage, they were Sent to th s office by the officer in charge of the picket post. The matter was brought before Colonel Grimshaw, Thon commanding the division; the boggage was searched Aud found to consist of a 1arge lot of new aud old dresses, bow dress patterns, boots, groceries and medicines. On ‘the persous of the ladies were found a large lot of letters addressed to parties in Richmond avd other points in the Confederate lines, Mrs, Hissell tried to bribe the lady who searched her to destroy the leiters. Te party, goods, ‘Dageage and mail were all seut under guard to Washing- ton. As they came and went by turnpike, it is casy to ‘conceive how efficient the railroad detectives were in *his transaction, 1 e houor to be, sir, your obedient servant, SiUART WALKER. {Te reply to the above we have to state that we have Feceived the most positive assurauces that, not- withstanding the parties came to Fairfax, a8 stated in Mr. Walker's letter, the object of their mis- sion wus not detected until tney attempted to get their persons and wares through the lines by means of the 0, and A.M R.R, There seems to be no ‘Varjance between the statements of our correspondent ‘and those of Mr. Walker in regard to the facts—only a little susceptibility on Mr. Walkor’s part, which may and maay not be justiliable.—Ev. Hera.) Lanman’s Dictionary of Congress. TO THE BPIYOR OF THK HERALD, Wasuincton, March 4, 1864. ‘Your Washington correspondent has made a statement respecting my ‘ Dictionary of Congress’? which is cal- culated to injure my reputation, and is without founda. tion. He intimates that I baye been attempting to swindle the government, and that mavy members of the House of Representatives changed their votes after they had ascertained my purpose ‘The resolution for adopt- ing my work as a public document was passed by a vote of seventy-seven, while the rescinding yote was only Beventy » It was known that some twenty of my friends were absent, and so my personal and political enemios jumped at the chance 0: giving mea blow. My Supporters were made up of democrats, border States men and repablionns, and Iam not aware that a single ‘one changed his vote against me. ‘The warfare upon my ‘work was inaugurated by personal enemies and by seve Fal extreme men, who became angry with me becwuse [ Would not puil them in my historical record. Hundreds of the very best men in the ia+ have encourage me in my unde and I hive been almost unanimously supported press, und the slightest deviation from my duty a3 an impartial writer of dry bistory would hhave forfeited my claim to the respect of intelligent men everywhere.
