At nine o'clock the same night Mr. Colby discovered a sloop, which he boarded, She proved tu be the British sloop ‘Hope, of Nassau, on ber way down the inlot to Sand Point, en route to Naswau. She was taken possession of ‘as a prize, when she was found to have nineteen bales of cotton on board, After captumvg the Hope Mr. Colby took a sharp look ‘around, to see what he could pick up in a small way. He was rewarded by getting possession of the Hritish sloop . Garibaldi, bound also to Nassau, with twelve baids uf cotton on board. As considerable mterest is felt in the movements of this vessel, I have deemed it worthy to give you a few facis in relation to the voyage of the Atlanta from Phi Jadelphia to Hampton Roads. Our ship, it will bere membered, was originally tho British steamor lingal, and subsequently was cut down and converted into a very formidable iron-clad by the rebels, and was called the Atlanta. She was captured in June last in Warsaw Sound by the floating battery Weehawken. We sailed from Philadelphia on Thursday last, at three o'clock, un- dor the convoy of the doubie ender Wyalusiug. Lieutenant Commander When about three miles out the Wyalusiog collided with a tropeiler, and sas. tained so much damage ts she was obliged to return to Philadelphia tor ‘ire. We went on fincly to the mouth of Delaware jot Knowing Whether we should go to Bea or not without a convoy. On arriving of cas Honiopen the weather was so in- viting that our captain could not resist the temptation to go on alone, aud we made the necessary proparations for going to Hainpton Roads aione. Our batches wore put on, {he ports closed, and we went slong nicely until mid: when a hoavy sea began to got up, forced aguinet us by a strong head wind, whiok at times compicte y submerged us. As it moderated a little we opened the alga hatch; but the water rushed in with tremendous flooding the decks. Those who bad turned in furaea ‘out quickly, fearing the vessel was about to foun. der, as did the Weehawken. But we bys! ie mm P hangings, and there wi abn ‘Oast- wigs ep Salen in that way. Ovnicr OF Care Covnniaaary, Quiver, Fla., Nov. 2, 1863 It bas been a subject of auxious’ consideration how I could, without injury to our cause, expose to the peoplo throughout the State the prevent perilous condilton of our army. Todo this through the public press would point Out our source’ of danger to our enemies. To see each one in person, or even a sufficient number to effect the object contemplated, is impossible; yet the necessity of geveral and immediate action is. imperative to save our army, ud with it our cause, {rom disaster. We hopo it will not become necessary to resort to tmpressments — & people fighting for thoir existence, and in defence of their homes and coumtry and institutions. During the debate on the proposition to'sell the surplus gold of the government, it was stated that Secretary Chase had not yet asked Congress for authority to do so, and we presume the Committee on Ways and Means, upon this statement, were in- duced to report adversely upon the resolution. If the Secretary has not sought the power which the resolution intended to confer, let him do ao at once by all means. The proposition is a good one, and if properly carried out would have a salutary effect. Any amount above six or eight millions thrown suddenly into the New York market would smash the gamblers for six months at least, and cause the greenback currency to ‘approxi- mate to the value of coin” more suddenly than Mr. Chase inhis most sanguine mood can at present hope for.
