HOW HE WAS CAPTURED AND WHEN, Journey te Richmond and Its At- tendant Diflicuities, Inside Views of Castle Thunder, Castle Light: ning and Libby Prisons. FOUR DAYS IN HELL’S HALF ACRE. How Our Correspondent Came to Visit That Interesting Locality. THE RELEASE ON PAROLE, ae 6. a Mr. L. A. Hendrick’s Narrative. A RINBTY DAYS’ PAROLE. «You are paroled for ninety days, and bore is your dis- charge from Castle Thunder. The fag of truco boat leaves at seven o’clock in the morning, You will be called for at six o’clock,”? Welcome words these to my ears, I had longed, and worked, and prayed for their utterance. I remember the words now, and wonder ai the passivenoss with which I received their announce: ment from Lieutenant Callahan. As, atthe ond of six days of freedom, | sit down in the quiet of my own homo to write the incidents of my capture, my journey to the confederate capital, and my twelve weeks’ experionces in ® Richmond prison, that capture, that journey, those twelve weeks’ experiences, the mephitic air of those crowded prison rooms, those huge winiows and fron bars, and listless and hopeless peering through them into the great outer world of sunshive and activity and hope, those unyielding doors and massive bolts, the shrieks of the manacied in the! condemned cells, the continual elangor of chains and balls, the impenetrable cordon of bayoneted sentine's fronting the doors and Jining the passages, and circuiting in double lines tho foutlding; the l9nging desires and striv- ings for deliverance, the sickness and despair and devth from hope too long deferred, seem to me the visitations of @ troubled dream an impossible reality. 1 would that it were a dream; but it is not. Paris and her prisons, in that memorable reign of terror marked by the soverciga. ty of the guillotine, and the massacre of St. Bartholomew, were but little ahead of Richmond and ber pris: vs to-day. Within the confines of the rebel capital there now live and languish thousands of noble avd pstrictic men Avd only he who bas been a prisoner can (ol! what they suffer; not sufferings inflicted by the government holding them captives; not sufferings from scarcity jo food, or blankets, or fires, or inadequacy of shelter, but a prolonged deprivation of liberty—the heated iron euter ing the soul, the anxiety of mind that is whiteving the hair and making prematurely old its victims—a slow aud sure harasement of soul and body, which, too long pro- tracted, must culminate in the grave or windy extiv- Guished in raging despair or pitiful mbecility. ‘WILAT MAY NOP AND WHAT MAY HE WRITTEN. A paroled prisoner, 1 write, of course, with & shack'ed pen. The strength, position and intentions of the Confede- rate government, what I may kuow of internecine d sven tons, the feelings of the maes regarding the war and any thing caloulated to impart information to the Northern government likely or possible to be used to their disad ‘vantage I am prohibited from writing. 4nd yet Tam frank to say that this probibition, although a part of the prescrib. ed formula of a parole, aud binding upon the mon necepting it, seems to me enveloped with # large degree of absur- dity, in view of the freedom with which their own papers write ana comment upon the state of public affairs. The fact is, the reticence characterizing their own journals at the outset of the war has taken tho other extreme, Editors exercise no restraint in writing, and write leas about ‘dying in the last ditch; legislators do not hesitate to blazon in leaded” type thoir crimivations of heads of government and recriminatiens of each other officers and privates give printed publicity to their dis ontent, with no gleaming of any glorious summer sun brighten ghe sombre background; civilians, as well ar soldiers, promulgate logs of faith in the Southern currevey and far and wide have gone forth the y 6 of all classes consequent on threatening starvation, their daily lessening facilities for furnishing equiproents and clotthiny for their armies, the wearing out of their re\iways and persistent refusal of recognition by foreign Powers Mad I freedom, therefore, to write upon these matiers it would only be writing an old and oft told tale, familiar to every one who has either read their own papers or the clippings from them published in the Nortbern prers. While I aw thankful at being spared this labor, and what otherwise might seem a necessity of elaborating these stale topics, Iwill say this much—.nd neither this fact nor the allu sion just given to the publicity allowed at the South re garding military affairs and the sentiments of the people can, I think, be set down as any violation of my parole— that I could add bat little to the siock of iwformation afforded through the columne of their own papers, files o which the Hrratp—whose enterprise no wars or rumors of wars can lessen or frustrateregularly obtains regularly serves to its miliion readere. The story of my capture, the Incidents of my journey to Richmond and my own prieon experiences, and what I know of the treatment and condition of Union prisoners, I am allowed fall liberty to write; and upon the latter topics I well know I shall be going over trodden ground but the authenticity of the facts and the interest so many feel in whatever is written regarding our Rich- mond prisoners, and particularly by one who has been a fellow companion and sufferer,] doubt not will make ‘amends for unavoidable lack of freshnees in the situations described and renewed description of that far away prison life, with its strange mingling of joys and sorrows, hope and despondency—a life revealing each inner nature—self-denial, tenderness, devotion and all the heroism of noble deeds, or the meanest selfish nese: and potty speculations—a life only lived and experienced within prison walls. BOOKED FOR RICHMOND. Mr. Hart, a fellow Hsratp correspondent, who, like myself, bag his individoal story to write, and choice of manner and time to write it io, was captured with me. Major Mosby was our captor, For one who bas necompanied the Army of the Potomac ever since the inauguration of the war, and been with it in nearly every battle it haw fought, I regret to say that no front rack witnessed our capture; that no bullets whispered secordant notes praise of our heroism; that no sbelie shrieked diemay and death to our captors. ‘There was none of the teree tragedy of the battle field.
