A matter of guch tmport ‘46 the time aud place of nominating a Presidential candi- date was not intended to be included in this duty, RESTRICTIONS UPON TRADE IN EASTERN VIRGINIA, Great complaint is made by loyal citizens of Fastern Virginia of the unnecessary restrictions imposed upon trade, and the influx of speculators from abroad, who are allowed by the military to monopolize business. This ia especially the cage at Alexandria and Martinsburg. At the latter place twenty establishments, whose owoers ‘Tho genlal weuthor and good state of the ico yesterday | were loyal men, and nad secured livenees for thoir buat ‘Bttracted an immense throng of visitors to the Park. Even long before the entrances wore gained the crowd ould be seen flocking along the various avenues, with Sboir faces turned ina northward direction, At tha @utrances to Pass along paths of a narrower width than the avenuos. ‘Tho Sixth and Seventh avenues entrances, being stopping ‘ness until May, 1864, were poremptorily closed, and threo men introduced from Baltimore who bave a monopoly of the trade. In Alexandria there aro three largo brewerles idle, Their owners have been known the Park tho crowd socemed to | as loyal men ever since. the outbreak of tho ave increased, by reason of the fact of their having to war bat the mancfacture of malt liquors is forbidden, while hundreds of barrels of ale are shipped to the city every month by outsiders. In other branches of busi- Pluces for the cars frow down town, seemed to be the | ness it is the same. The people ure taxed by the govern. More oxtensively patroujzod; but the Fifth avenue en- trance, at Fifty ninth street, Visitors although not entering the Park in such concen- Srstednumbers, The entrance at Seveuty-socond street, from the Third avenue cars, showed the same dense Srowds, The wretched state of the upper end of tye Fifth ave ‘Due prevented many carriages from entering the Park, and they were potas numerous as might haye been ex- pocted; but still the Drive was very lively with vehicles, Gud the various paths with pedestrians, But the ponds wero the great attraction, The lower Pood, although ina fair condition, did not meet with as tony admirers as might have been expected; but still ‘& great crowd was there assembled. Tho upper portion sof the Idwer lake having been sot aside for thé curlers, the sporting Scotchmen soon opened their game, several Tinks wereestablisued, and the game of curling wont on Gnoly. Tho ice was not as glib as it might have been; Dut stili tho “canny Nérthmea” made the best of it, ‘The Mall was a scone of lively interest, with regard to the moving masses that were hastening towards the ‘Terrace. On reaching the upper lake the visitor could scarcely help uttering a few words of aurprise at beholding the immensa crowd of persons on tho ice. The space was Literally black with skaters. Such a crowd had never Doon seen before on that part of the Park. Four years ‘ainice the number of persons who had visited the Park foo was éstimated at eighty thousand; but now those who had been for years in the habit of estimating the number ‘of visitors to the ground, estimated that up to dusk at Jeast ove hundred thousand persons had been on the ice. After the moou rose about twenty thousand wore visi- tors wore seen on the ice enjoying the favorite sport of moonlight skating. ‘The Conservatory pond was thrown open to the public, ut vory few persons availed themscives of the privilege, with the excoption of a few unruly boys, who had left Bho upper pond to avold tho police. These were in every person's way, nob Ddeivg able to skate at all themselves, Gud only prevented those who loved good skating from enjoying the sport. ‘The attack upon the skate-letting houses and the re- fresument saloons was really remarkable. ‘The Messrs. ‘Walton had provided ten thousand extra pairs cf skates for tho occasion, in addition to their usually iarge stock; ‘but during the heat of the affair it was impossible to bire - One pair from any of their places. The noted eatorer from the Astor House had brought up food enough to supply three or four army corps, and notwithstanding thia fact tho was caten out of houze and home before three o'clock in the afternoon, Of course hig assistants, Mesers. Alex. ander Stetson and W. H. Radford, soon started down ‘town to replenish the commissariat; but many bad to go hungry for while. A few slight accidents occurred through the day, and One or two severe ones. The Iatter were readily and @ratuitously attended to by Dr. G. C. de Marini, of Thirty Gourth atreet, surgeon to the New York Sicating Club. The Washington Pond, Brooklyn. ‘The annual opening of the Washington pond took place yosteraay, under the happiest auspices. The ice, which was (ully five inches thick, was in excellent condition, and ‘was patronized by about five thousand of the elie of South Brookiyn. A band of music was in attendance, and Giscoursed some delicious airs. Manager Oaiman was ‘Qdiquitous in his exertions to make things pleasant, and ‘was the recipient of warm congratulations for the suc- @cesful manner in which the opening was conducted. The Christmas Festival. The Christmas festival wap well and generally cele Drated in this city and throughout the country. The day ‘wan everything that could be desired, so far ag the ‘weather wags concerned—bright, clear, bracing aod deaith'ul—and our city has seldom presented a more en- received quite as many | and at the same time most of their establishments meut, drafted, and their State authorities recognized, ° shut up, while every encouragement is offered to adven- turers from other cities. Three fourths of the business men in Alexandria are non-residents, The now Legisla- ture and tue Virginia representatives tn Congress have endeavored to correct these evils without success. The in+ habitants are united in expreesions of dissa chon with the course of the govervment, and are considering the expediency of calling an informal convention in relation to the matter. Thero i reason to believe that theso facts are not fully understood at the beadquarters of the de- partment, but unless corrected soon evi! cannot fail to ensuo SUPPLIES FOR THE REBULS FROM MARYLAND, Thero is no doubt that the rebels are receiving large quantities of supplies from Maryland across the Upper Potomac, Parties find little or no difficulty in crossing at Berlin and Point of Rocks, and an exteosive trade is going on between Baltimore and Loudon, It is knowu that goods have been roceived at Orange Court House by this route, and communication between the rebels and their sympathizers in Maryland scarcely meets with in- terruption. There is reason to believe that there is now moro smuggling over this route than there has been at any period on the Chesapoake Bay or the Lower Poton THE CKSILVER MINING CLAIM SULT.
