- # i § "FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Weoxespay, Dec. 16—6 P. M. Whe stock markets was again active thie morn- tog, and prices were well sustained, with a «mall, advance en most of the leading shares. Hirie Pai). yosd advanced %, and the preferred #toga ¥% New York Central went up 4%, Hodson Rives Reading %, Chieago and Roc kK Island, %, Cleve- jand and Pittebarg 1, Galena 1%, rt Wayne % Chicago and Northwestern %, “bd Cleveland and Toledo 34. The speculative wovement continued tw the afternoon, and prices eontinued to rise. The cloving quotations were #8 follows: faiena and Chigago Aton and Terre Haute. @umberiand Coa! —Ip regard to the Cumberland Coal Company, whose stock rev up this afternoon five per cent, we learn that Brown Brothers & Co. and others have agreed to advance money to pay off its en- fire bonded debt, making the necersary loan for Pfieen yoars at’six per cent interest, without the weval commissions or other charges. They have also loaned the company, to be used as a working eapital,-2140;000 for five years, at the eame rate of dnterest, secured by a second mortgage. The gold market was active to-day, and prices van ap in the afternoon, large sales having been made. The ore were the aan tate ~ —A large sale was aa at the last figure, and the market closed firm. ‘The bill introduced in the United States Senate on Tuesday by Senator Lane, @f Kaneas, making gambling in gold, as it is carried on in the vicinity ef Wall street, a misdemeanor, seems to have had no effect upon prices. The evil which the resolu. tion aims to rectify would not be abolished even if Mshould become a law. The regular exchange would probably be broken up, and the three days time sales” would no longer be made; but other wise the transactions would be carrried on in the same manner as now. Mr. Lane evidently has very little knowledge of Wall street, or he weuld never have attempted to break cown v0 formidable an organization as the gamblers in «gold bave perfected by 50 weak a weapon as his resolution would prove. If the Jaw passes Con- gress, the transactions will take place almost en- tirely along the curbstones, by brokers whore of- fices are in the crowns of their hats or in their over- coat pockets, and the deliveries would be made at some designated headquarters in the vicinity, By this means gambling would be carried on to & much greater extent than it is at present, as the wame parcel of gold could be sold and resold a @ezen times during a single day, while at present a sale is seldom perfected before one or two @elock in the afternoon. ‘The business at the office of the Aesistant Trea- worer to-day was as follow $6,485,078 (277/828 20;222,768 Included in the above receipts is $236,000 for @estoms. The government has now in the vaults @f the Sub-Treasury in this city over eleven mil- Hons in coin, a portion of which will be distributed after the Ist of January in payment of interest on some of the government securities. The Comptroller of this city invites, until the Mth of December, proposals for $230,000 of the water bonds of the city of New York, bearing in- terest at the rate of five per cent per annum, pay- able quarterly, and the principal reimbursable on the let of November, 1879. A number of plots of land situated in Dubuque and other parts of the State of Iowa, belonging to the Artisans’ Bank, of this city, were sold yester- ay at auction, and bronght the aggregate amount ef about $6,250. The steamship Scotia took out to-day $452,187 in epecie. The subscriptions to the government loan were a2 follows: — Bobecriptions for 5-20° (direct) . Bepoeited by agents. Total ..... Temporary ioa The new Board of Direc tors of the ¢ ‘anton Com- pany, it is announced, have determined to dispose of their water privileges at Baltimore, which will probably prove of great advantage to the city, and enable the company to refund their capital stock, if not to pay dividends.
