The excitemont in the stock market continued to-day, and the speculative movement which is going on increases in interest. During the greater part of last week there was an unaccountable dulness pervading the market, and under the influ- ence of the lethargy prices on each succeeding day tended downwards. This state of things did not correspond with the sentiments of bull opera- tors, and the bank statement, which appeared on Monday afternoon, gave them suflicient capital to excite the market and build up prices. They have succeeded even beyond their expectations, as the advance to-day will clearly show. The reaction appeafs to be the greatest in the Western railway shares, which have advanced 1 to‘ ae cent. Cleveland and Toledo went up 3, Clevelwnd and Pittsburg 2, Rock Island 1, Alton and Terre Hante 1%, Harlem 2%, Hudson River 11%, New York Central 2, Erie 34, and Reading 154. The mascel- lanoous shares are also up. Tho public should look with some degree of suspicion upon tho ope- rations in Cleveland and Toledo Railroad shares, as there are pretty strong evidences that a corner is being moulded which may soon have a sharp turn, The cloaing quotations of the day were as fol- Harlem.. The gold market this forenoon was even more languid and the sales more limited than on Monday. Buyers were evidently holding back for a decline. It was announced about a fortnight since that the coal speculators in Pennsylvania, in order to keep up the price of coal, had decided to stop the work in the mines on the 14th of December. We learn that they became somewhat frightened in regard to the probable effect of the proposed Movement, and subsequently concluded to allow the mining operations to proceed, the cffect of which has been a considerable reduction in the price of coal. The Butchers’ and Drovers’ Bank of this city has declared a semi-annual dividend of five per cent, free of government tax, payable on the 20th January. The Michigan Central Railroad Company has declared a dividend of six per cent, payable on the Ist of January. The First National Bank of Washington, D. C., which, by the way, was the twenty-sixth in the order of organization, will cammence the issue of the new national currency on Thursday or Friday of this week. The bills are ready in this city, and will be sent to Washington to-morrow (Wednes- day). The war between the associated banks of New York and the new national banks was commenced on Monday. The State institutions have made the first assault, in the publication of a report made by the bank committee, which was appointed on the 6th of October last for the express purpose of maugurating the war.
