1 INTERESTING FROM CHARLESTON. ‘The Continued Bombardment of the the City and Sumter. "NEWS TO SATURDAY LAST, -THE LATEST REBEL ACCOUNTS, &e., &., &e. ‘The United States steam transport Arago, Capt. Henry A. Gadaden, from Port Royal at eight A. M. and Charles- *ton Bar at six P. M. on the 28th ult., arrived at this port sat ten o'clock last night, bringing two hundred and ninoty- -OL@ presengers and the u ual mails. Among the passen- gers were Brigadier General A. Ames, Brigadier General SGprague and Brigadier General Schimmelfeunig. Mr. Oscar G. Sawyer’s Despatch. Four Ia.anp, 3. C., Nov. 28, 1868. THM sITUATION, ‘Thore is little cbango to be noted inthe situation of efiatre before Charleston. Gur fire is steadily maintained ~against Sumter, which presents about the same appear- -ance extorually as it did afew weeks ago. Of course the * “‘Bubtoring it has received has weakened it greatly; but, as -Lbave just remarked, the general features of the work emain pretty neatly the same as they did some time ago. Our fire is direoted principally against the face to- ~wards the city, apd our mortar shells drop into the shat- tered stronghold with a regularity and effect that render dts occupation # matter neither safe nor pleasant. Nct “<@ dag. pemace that the garrison does not lose men, and ® rifle shot, striking on the “Tight epot, orushes in an arch, and sends tons of masoory “Crashing upon the beads of those seeking safety in the casémates. I noticed in my correspondence a week or ‘€wo ago the fact that thirteen mon wero instantly ktiled ‘Dy the «rob failing in upon them, and I have now to re- «cord @ second oocurrence of tbe same nature, resulting in the death of two negrvcs and the wounding of six others, ‘and injuring two soldiers, Tois occurred on the 2ist ‘inetant,at five o'clock in the morning. The Mercury ~@tates that a broken arch of the gorge wall was struck by Parrott shell, and fell in, burying the men referred to ab ve. The day before that one soldier was killed and ‘th ce wounded by she Is. The Mercury states that twelve shells wore thrown into the city on Saturday last, and eighteen others at a Aator hour, ‘doing comparatively little injury.” ‘The first and only victim of the Yankee bombardment, thus far, ‘was on old negro wiman, be‘oaging toa Bir, Lindsay. ‘Sho was killed on Saturday fdrenoon. SOME MISSTATEMENTS CORRECIED One of the New York dailies receatly indulged in a ‘very upprovoked attack on Geveral Gillmore for alleged ‘maltreatment of the colored troops under bis command. At was asserted that they were compelled to perform more fatigue duty than their share; that they were treeted ~m_ re like menials than soldiers, and that in consequence General Gillmore bad become exceedingly unpopular among the officers of the colored troops. Now, having ~@ome knowledge of the condition and treatment of the colored troops, both from persoval observation and «the reports of thelr officers, I am able to deny tho truth of these affegations. The colored troops Go not perform more than their share of fatigue duty, end in all military movements where the bayonet takes the place of the spade they join in with the white sol- diors. Inevery way they aro troated precisely os the ‘white troops, aod share alike with them in the toils of gue duty and the porits of battle, As to their not ing permitted to drill, every one here knows to the Major General Q. A. GILLMORE. ‘oo, ‘Assistant Adjutant Faoeral. Ufficiai—ierant R. ‘Srnuxy, Captain Forty. seventh New ‘Work Volunteers, A. A. A. G. It is to be hoped that the Post will bo more careful of the sources from which it gsins its information, and it ‘will make fewer misstatements tn future. I may safely in conclusion, that General Gillmore has the perfect 6e and regard of all tho officers ia the colored Tegiment, as he has ot all those of the white troops, and 32 THANKSGIVING DAY. ‘The following order proclaimed a thanksgiving in this «dopartment, and it was generally observed:— GRR . 104. Toxapay, Dec. 1-6 P.M Tho stock market was oppressed to-day at the opening, and prices took another downward turn, which the bears claimed to have been the result entirely of theiy management. But upon this oc- casion thir ego! ia has led them to assume too much, for the cause may be traced to parts distant from Wall street. The people are beginning to cal- culate upon the shortness of the time before a crash must come, and they are making arrangements to meet it by restricting their purchases and gradually withdrawing from the market, leaving the jobbers and the gamblers, who are always in ‘the oblivious calm of indiff- rence’? in regard to approaching danger, to bear the brunt of the collapse. The public have become fully convinced that the prea- ent inilated state of the share market cannot con tinue a day beyond the time when the first olick of the telegraph announces the rebellion at an end; and each day's intelligence presses the conviction upon them that that consummation is not far dis- tant. It has been our duty to warn tbem in time, and we are gratified to find that our caution has not been permitted to pass unheeded.
