New Onteans, Noy. 19, 1805. ‘Tho succoss of the expedition to Texas under Major Govera! Bauxs and the instalment of his stmy on tho Soil of that Stato continue to be the topte of general con- versation in this city. Some persons, and especially those unfriendly to the government, appear to treat the* mattor cavalierly; but if the secrets of oir hearts were koown they would show distrust for robel prospects in ‘Toxas and success for the Union army. What Geveral Banks’ plans are in relation to Texas I know not, nor do I cart; but this 1 do know: he has a great work before ‘Lim, avd, with the proper support of the goveramséut at Washington, it will got be long before he agter of the Situation, adding new conquests to our-catalogue of vic- tories, with corresponding results to tue people of that ‘State and th® country at large, MITCTARY GOVERNOR HAMILTON, OF TEXAS, fort here to-day on the steamer Thomas P. Scott, to enter ‘pon his official duties. He will proceed to Brownsville, where ke will havo his headquarters for the present. He is accompanied by a staff, selected for thotr capacity for their several duties in tho administration of the in ternal aflnirs of State, The Governor left here under tho most flattering auspices, and carries with him the “God | spocd” of many warm friends, A few days before bis departure (paid bim @ visit to learn his views on mattors volative to'the “Loue Star” State, Ee gave me positive essurance tat ithe was supported by a sufficient miti- ‘tary forcs, and in such measurea that he should adopt, it would be Bat a short time before the cebel armies aud webol rule would be driven from the State. THE POPULATION OF TEXAS is compored of very differen: materia! from the other Btatos ctuimed os portions of the rebel coulederacy, The Gorman eleineut entors largely into that population. it necds no aecurance from me to say that since this reveliion tho Germans, whether within the enemy"s lines or within Our owu, baye given theclearest proof of their devotedness fo the Union and their hatred of rebel rule. The Ger- Yanvsof Western Texas, in which locality they numeri- cally predominate, are a hardy set of agriculturists, and, 18 a goveral thing, non-slayeholders. The Germans of Wostera Texas are entitled to thecredit of giving the firet ‘practical demonstration that the cotton lands of that State—and it con be done as wo!) in other Southern Statea—cas be tilled by compensated white and colored lnber with better results than under the old system of giave labor, It is owing to this fast that tho planters of Eastern Texas, who are generally settlers from the South. ero States, bave for many years supremely bated their German neighbors, thinking at fome future. day the old Olirarciul system might be superseded, Since the cojn- Mencoment oi the prosent rebeliton Uiese Germans of ‘Western Texas have been the cbjects of suspicion of the exrome Southern rebels, who have cubjected them to the most arbitrary treatment for snpposed or anticipated offvaces. It is to the Germans of the State Genoral Banks and General Hamilton are to look for their moral if not sheit playstea! eupport in this crigis for the redemption of che Stato, both of which [havo no doubt will be fally aud oheo: full} on. . 4. =: Gh MGR TR Tovae mexaxe nave mew mean. ‘Agnio, in the redemption of Texas and its entire resto ration to the Union our armies way expect support from the thousmuds @% honest agriculturists who haye been muitreated and robbed of the products of their labor by the machinations, extortions, intrigace aud false promises ¢ 1 military men and cotton dealers. The cotton ‘crops of the planters bave been rudely taken from them, ‘Dy force of rebo! bayonets, at ihe captors’ own price, and paid for in revel ecrip aud promikce to pay. ‘These facts cave exasperated the people, aud they now ouly await (ue arrreal of a sufllctent force of Uuion troops in the tant polats of the State, so as to insure a permanent socupation of the State, to flock to the standard of the Tinwon and lead thelr support in any way necessary.
