No. 15 Hupgoy Stxast, New Yorx, Nov, 11, 1863. Sim—I was much surprised to find two vory lengthy and Verbose cards in to-day’s Hzratp—one emanating from Joseph Coburn, “Champion of America,’ and the other from Ed. Wilson, of Weehawken—both, as if by precon- cert, containing soveral statements concerning Con. Fits- gerald which look very well until both sides of the stery ay told. Ahout that portion of Mr. Coburn’s letter where refers to loaning Mr. Fitzgerald $26 to make a matoh for $3,000 a side he is correct to a certain extent; but as to the money being withdrawn at Con.’s own consent I ‘deg leave to differ with Mr. Coburn, as I was present and wituessed the whole transaction. As to Oon.’s makiug @ Propoait ion to draw no such thing ever occurred; but real cause was the refusal of any other party vo hold the money, after a well known person, in wi hands the $50 was put up, bad declined to retain it, otherwise the Sporting community may rest assured that no forfeit should ever bave occurred on our part. In regard to Mr. Fitzgeraid’s challenge to any man in America for the chamnpionship—as he has since left for London to assist and befriend John ©, Heenad in his forthcoming battio with Tom. King—I haves little explanation. [ undor- stand that both Coburn and Wilson were cognizant of Con.’s intentions beforehand, otherwise they would pot havo rushed simultanoously neadiong in print, fooling Kafe that no reply would be elicited—at least not from Oon,— ag he is now on the broad ocean; but as the pub- lie may not understand the circumstances I will explain ‘When Con, issued his challenge he had no idea of going to Fngland, and it was printed before he could rectify it. In proof of this, I have simply to state that he had en- gaged and paid for o halt, had tickets, billa, &c., printed for ‘cing exhibition, together with undergoing other incidental expenses, all of which ho let pass to befriend his follow countryman, Jobu C, Heevan. It is @ soif-ovi- dent fact that the main cause for Mr. Coburn’a card is owing to Con. Fitzgerald (who was born and bred in the game county as Heonan) being selected above aii otvers by Heenan’s friends to represent America in tho forth coming fnternational contest, and ho feols galled and Jealous that he, assuming the title of Champlen of Amori- ‘ca, was not selected for that important mission. Con, Fitzgerald sailed from Boston in the Canada this noon, Avery few words will suffice for Mr. Wilson. Ashe complained of being weak and balf starved at his Inst fight, he will baye an opportunity to ‘feed up” by the time of Con.’s return, when he can get all tho fight ho wants, ‘Trusting that, in justice to Con. Fitzgerald, who cannot answer for himself, you. will give this an insertion as @ reply to Coburn and Wilson’s carda, I beg to subscribe myself yours, respectfully, WILLIAM FITZGFRALD, Brothor of Coa. A little better feeling was ma nifested at the second board, and stocks, on the whole, went up. Atthe laat sales of the public board there was a still further advance, and the merket was comparatively buoyant. Harlem made another jump of four percent. Michigan Central, a4 compared with the sales at the first board, went ap 2, Pacific Maill, Hudson River 1°, Cleveland and Pittsburg 3%, Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago 2%, Hudson River 1%, and Iilinoia Central 2. After the board the market was still better, and Erle reached 103% and New York Central 138. Buyers were moré numerous being under the impression that the bottom had been found; bat the bears remain inexorable and insist upon a further decline. The money market was very close in the morn- ing, and the cheerfulness that was evinced on Mon- day at the prospect of a clearing ap resolved again into elongated countenances, tinged with mazarine bine. The banks now hold twenty-five millions of legal tenders, which it is supposed ia their maxi mom; and whether they will now relax their grip and relieve the pressure remains to be seen. Upon this point opinions are divided. The old banks have inaugurated @ conflict with the new government institutions, in which the former must, if the war goes on, become the “under dog.” The new national banks another step in the march of financial progress. When Martin Van Buren's safety fund system was established in this State it became popular, because it was an improvement upon the old go-it-alone sys tem, which offered no secarity whatever to billholders or depositors. Then followed the New York General Banking law, and the establish- ment of banks under it, based upon the deposit of State stocks, which quickly crowded out the old safety fund concerns. Now come the national banks, which have already gained a foethold, and any attempt to «tay their progress or weaken the popular feeling in their faver will prove abortive, whether it come from individuals, cliques or mo- neyed institations The current of greenbacks, which, ae we stated, was setting last week towards the West, has again changed, and they, are now returning to New York, at the rate of half » million or mores day. This fact seems somewhat surprising when we consider that money is worth eight per cent in Cincinnati and eight end o half ia Chicago. The people of California have taken up the rail- road business, and are now as fully ongroseed in the working and contemplation of that kind of im- provement aa their Hastern frienda ever wore. Fouy lines will be in operation in that State next month—one running from San Francisco to San Jose, another from Marysville to Oroville, a third from Goslinville to Brighton, anda section of the Pacific Railroad from Sacramento. In addition to these the work is progressing on the railroad from San Jose to Stockton and on the Folsom and Pla cerville road.
