At two P. M. the supply of money at 7 per cent to brokers in good credit was about equal tothe demand. Tie banks are not free lenders, having placed themselves in the power of the Se- eretary of the Treasury by rashiy subscribing for $50,000,000 of new interest bearing notes, without making sure of being able to get the notes when they wanted them. However, Assistant Secretary Field is here, and the probability is he will devise some plan by which the banks may be enabled to work more smoothly again. The subscriptions to the 6-20 bonds show a considera- ble falling off. The amount reported to-day fs $1,077,600, of which $748,500 were through the sub-agents. Considerable amounts of these bonds have lately been bought on speculation, and are Deing offered forsale. There is an impression in some quarters that the immense subscriptions recently reported may be liable to a reduction, jn this way :—A sub-agent, findin; the o outaid imand very large, may take a considerable ani on speculation for his own account, all of which he includeg in his returns for that day. His own redken Ke maytdispose of the next day, includ g them again in his returns, thus making the amounts appear twice. The balance at the Bub-Treasury this evening stands at $32,080,409, Against $34,533,772—-showing a considerable fall- ing off. Gold has fluctuated between 146 a 146% through out the day, with very little doing. The closing price is 14644. Exchange is also dull at 161 for bankers’ bills. Belmont & Co.’s bills are selling % per cent under the market price, the supposi- tion being that their bills are drawn against ship- ments of gold by them to Mexico for French ac- count. ‘The business in stocks continues to be, influenced almost entirely by the course of the money mar- ket. This was very ewident this morning from the decided improvement which showed itself 80 soon ‘as it was reported that money was rather easier. Erie was sold early in the day as high as 109%, and other things in proportion; but, as might be expected, this fall advance was not maintained. The fact that the recent decline has been so small, In the face of such a sharp twist in the money market, gives people great confidence in the real intrinsic value of railroad property, andthe gene+ ral impression is that so soon as money is again easier speculation will set in and force prices ap to higher figures. We notice that the first through train of the Atlantic and Great Western Railway, broad gauge, arrived in Cleveland to-day from this city. The probability is that by February next cars gill run through direct from Hoboken to Cincinnati, by ‘straddling’ the Cincinnati, Hamil- ton and Dayton road. At the first board this morning the following changes took place, as com- pared with last evening:—New York Central ad- vanced %, Brie %, Reading 4, Michigan Central 1, Pratrie du Chien }{, Mlinois Central 1, Toledo %4, Fort Wayne 1, and Northwestern 114. Hodson River, Pittsburg and Galena were very firm at the extreme figures of last evening. Chicago and Alton advanced 2a 3 per cent, as the dividend is now being paid by G. S. Robins & Son, Cumber- fend advanced to 374%. The impression is that there isa large short interest in thie stock. Be- tween the boards the market was steady, but at the afternoon session was weak, and in some cases lost the advance of the morning. Harlem has been declining throughout the day. It opened at 110, dropped to 107 at the first board, was 104 at the second board, and closed at 101, At four P, M. there waa no recovery, and prices were again a lower.
