Would it not begin to be pretty generally reckoned that the end of the rebellion ‘was at last really at hand, ar uld not the end of paper issues be diseerned in the distance? Money is witheut change. in some quarters mere activity is reported; but this arises from particular movements in stocks requiring new and heavy sums of money to be borrowed on ehort Betive. The old stock firms are abundantly sup- plied with money at 5.a6 per cent, and are pre- pored to supply their less fortunate neighbors at geven per cent on good. collateral. In seme Brokers’ offices to-day the béport was that stocks ‘Were much searcer than money. A large amount of business Was done in stocks atthe board this morning; but the tone of the market was not as strong as yesterday, and pricea were generally lower, There was a disposition in some quarters to realize, and in others to sell short. Thus New York Central was 24 lower, Erie %,; Erie preferred %, Harlem 1, Michigan Central 3%, Pitteburg 1%, Southern old 124, Ilinoi# 134, Galena 124, Fort Wayne %, Rock land 1, North- ‘western 2, Canton 144, Cumberland 1/4, Pacific 4, The ealy stocks which advanced were Mari- etta and Cincinnati firsts, which rose 1 per eent,, and Quicksilver, which rose. Govern- ments were steady; bonds without change. At the close of the session the market was steady, but a fresh. attack was made upon the leading shares at the one P. M. public board, and they fell 340% percent all round. A rally em sued in the street after the adjournment, and at » the afternoon beard the whole market was %a% per cent better, with a rather better tone. Cam- berland rose % per cent. The decline in this stock from 34% to 31 is said to have been caused by some telegraphic messages from Baltimore, which were sent by parties amxious to buy; and annoyed atthe rapidity of the previous advance from 30 to 34%. After the second board the whole market was better, and at the four P.M. call everything was steady at the advance. It was rumc:ed some time since that the large surplus in the hands of the company would be divided prior to the lat, either in the shape of a scrip or a cash dividend, so as to give the whole benefit of it ~ the present shareholders. Aa, /however, nothing * ef the kind was even proposed at the recent meet- Ing of directors, and as there is to be ne other meeting before the Ist, it may be taken for grant- ed that the idea—if it was ever entertained by the beard—has been abandoned, and that no extra @ividend will be made. The third mortgage bonds, which are convertible, are. selling at 124; the gtock into which they may be converted im three weeks at 134. Within three weeks, there- fore, either the bonds will rise ten per cent or the stock will fall ten, or the stook will fall and the bends rise simultaneously until they meet each other. It will be curious to watch the operation. An addition of some 13,000 a 14,000 shares to the sapital stock of the Michigan Southern knocked the price from 110 to 75; how much will the price of Hudson be reduced by an addition of 18,000 shares to the 40,000 of which ita, capital now consists? We have the official annougcement of the 4 per sent dividend which was decMred on the 7th by the Cleveland and Pittsburg Railroad Company. The company assumes and pmRys the government bax, and hi surplus of over $200,000 on hand. We are unofficially informed that the earnings during the last three months of 1863 will probably yield not lesa than six per cent for the stock. The road is in perfect order, and only wants one thing—more ;equipment—which it is getting as fast as the maker can furnish it. It is due to Mr. James N. McCullpugh, the President of the road, that his success in extricdting this pro- perty from the hopeless itsolvency in which he fourid it should be recognized.. When he took Possesston of the road as re¢eiver, some four years ago, the mortgage bonds gpuld not find buyers at 40 and 50, the stock could hardly be given away, the concern was in default on its interest and everwhelmed by floating debt, and the earnings had fallen off to @ mere nominal sum, By good management, assisted by the general recovery of oar railway ayatem, Mr. McCullough has succeeded in paying off every dollar of fleating debt and back interest, in equipping the road as it never was equipped before, and finally in presenting the stookholders with a four per cent dividend, which will be regularly repeated at semi-annail intervals. There are few roads in the country’ whose business promises te be more permanent than that of the Cleveland and Pittsburg road, se- cured as it now is against fatal competition with the Fort Wayne. Mr. MeCallough may well be congratulated on $0 satisfactory result of his labors. We learn that the Treasury Department, having a surplus of gold on hand, has deeided to antict- pate, next week, the payment of the November coupons on the 5-20 bonds.
