a 7 Saar a FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Paray, Sept. 11—6 P. M. Money is worth seven per cent om call. Some heues are getting money left with them at six; but the general street rate, which {» cheerfully paid by speculators and large borrowers, is seven. Ameng the banks some nervousness with regard to the course of the market continues to prevail; but ax a general rule it is becoming admitted that the new negotiation with the government eannot operate unfavorably. Meroantile paper and debt certificates are without change. Gold opened at 22924 this morning, rose to 329%, and closed at five P. M. at about 129, Ex- ebange was dull and weak—sales of bankers’ bills at 141% a 142%. The slow fall of gold, which ereates so much surprise, arises in part from the wants of the bears, and in part from the legiti- mate demand from importers, who consider this a good time to buy. The market often seems to work for a time in opposition to sonnd principles; but they assert their sway sooner or Jater. When people expect it least we may have a sudden drop of 6 a6 per cent, The stock market was lower to-day. It opened ‘with a tame feeling, and at the first board almost everything declined, governments alone excepted. Missouris fell off 14, Quicksilver 4, Pacific Mail 2, Mew York Central 134, Erie 14, Erie preferred %, Hedson 4, Harlem 3, Reading %, Michigan South- ern 4, Cleveland and Pittsburg 344, Ilinois Oentral ‘24, Rock Island 2%, Fort Wayne 1, Toledo 1, Ga- Rena {. There was no change m bonds. Bucks @eunty Lead was the only thing which advanced; i pose 44 per cent. After the call the weaknessin fhe market became still more marked. Erie sold @ewn to 103%—a farther decline of % per e@ent—and the general market sympathized. At the one P. M. call there waa no peeovery in prices, but no further fall. @u the whole the market looked rather firmer, at fhe decline, than it had done all day. weeond board the market was irregular. Pitte- burg rose 1 per cent, Erie 4, Central 4; on tke other hand old Southern fell 4, Prairie du @hien 2, Rock Island 4%. There appears to have been a sale of Hudson River at 130, seller sixty, thengh we are assured that orders to buy at 134, eller sixty, were in the board and could not be fled. After the call the market was at first steady; but at the four P. M. call it became weak again, and there was a gencral decline of 4 to % per cent, The bears say that the bulls are quietly seHeving themselves of their etocks, while the dalle assert that the market is being hammered, and that a large bear interest is being created. A few days will prove which opinion is the sounder. ‘The following were the closing quotations of the 781 ,reg.1053 a 106 000.108 aw bo Cleve & Tol... 116 Rock Island, .. 105 108 4 8 103, Pp, PeFEW de Chi 8 Boison River!136 190°" Torretiante. 50 The following is a statement of the gross carn- fags ef the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad Company vision) from January 1 te June 30, aes NY Contral...131%{ 0 132 = $140,437 63 108 85:35 98 147,671 76 146,273 30 131,680 14 121,034 70 = $196,751 61 40,000 00 $896,251 91 1,381 19 <++ $045,370 22 The total earnings of the year 1861 were only $2771,999—less than those of the first six months of the present year.
