2 OUR IRON-CLAD NAVY. The “Thundering City” of the United States Navy. WEBB’S =e seubaiagecams Thirteen® Hundred Tons of Armor Plating to be Pat On, A Ploating Fort and Ram Combined. THE NAVAL WONDER OF THE AGR, ke. Kou we TAR INCEPTION, , One of tho most ourtous looking and formidable war voasels in progress of constractiom in this country is Mr. W. Hf. Webb's scrow ram Dunderberg, Ing every respect sho promises to be the bost constructed vessel in our navy. Shortly after the demand for iron-ciad vessels became so preasing the Navy Department requested several of our most sklitul shipbullders’ to forward to Washing- tom plans and specifications of vessels they would agreo to bulld. A large number were prepared and forwarde.t; dot the committer appointed by tho Department, aid not ‘Reo in any of thom sufficient merit to warrant them to ‘build vessels from their plaus. It is true some fow of our tioat prominent builders did not enter any modela, or make cny oilers, Among this number was My. Webb. Ho ‘Thad ou bis handy two frigates for the Italian goverment which were to bo tron-clad , and besides he had large con tracts with inerewntife firms; 80 that he did not care to waste bis time or talouls by sending to the Department ang plans which in the courso of events as they were thon transpiring might be rejected. Str. We'les, however, determined that Mr, Webb should show his skit! in the mattor of building’an ron-clad ram for either harbor de fence or for sen aorvies; sorhe wrote to Mr. Webb to pre- pare plans and a model of avesseP which should meet the requirements of the naval ico Of course Mr. Webb was compelted Ia 2 measure to ac- cale'tothesroquest of the'Seoretury of the Navy, and sot to work preparing a rough mode! of the ‘Yam. It was sent to Washiagton, the committes saw it, snid it was, pretty goou for ¢ vessel of its Kind, but it wouldn't do. Bat Mr. Welles said it was fast tho thing that was want. ed, and accordingly Mr. Webb was ordered to build « vessel after his model. : THE MAGNITUDE OF TH® VESSEL. The ros:it is (at the enggmous’ buik of wood which £m be seen at the foot of Sixth street ia the developmoat of the model which was formed from the drawings fur- nished by Mr. Webb. Quietly has the work progressed, MIL ns of feet of timber have been consumed, and to-day veasel has assumed @, tangibio form, and is viowed with Wonder and admiration by all who have visited Lor. Ver outward appearance does not show by any meaus the immense quantity of timber that has been used in Ler construction, Her sides, dock aud floor are solid oak, shoathad over with pine, which, in tho wake of the plat form» a cusbion for tho armor plating. DIMENSIONS. To give our readers somo idea of the magnitude of this vessel we give her dimensions:—~ xtreme length kext rome breadth, Waole dopth, ‘The whole upper surface is to be irou-plated to six feet below the water Hine, Above the deck she bas a large ouate to carry ten Deavy guns, aad above these are tv vo placed two revolving turrets. i‘ wR RAM. To form her enormous ram the bow of the veasel is sulid wood, running by:k over fifty feet. This, of course, is to be plated with tue vest quality of iron. ‘The sites of tho vessel, before the plating ts pat on, are over seven fect ip thickness, and that solid oak wood, She wiil have two rudders, which are protected by the peculiar construction of tha overhanging atern. THE RNGINES. Her engines will be six thousand horse power; #0 pha’ oxtraordinary speed can be got up on ber. THE HULL. ‘To give stability to tne hull at all times, and especially 1 tho timo of impact, when ramming a vossel, sho is pro- vided with ove maiu and four sister keelsons, which run the eative length of the vessel and meet at either end ~Yheeo aro of solid oak, and look as if they might bid de- fagoe to aay shock she ever may receive. The entire frame of the vessel is diagonally strapped with iron, whigh gives her great strongtn. At some distance from tho side of the vessel inboard is 4 ceiling or skio which furnishes a large number of store- rvoms, and at the same time makes ® water-tight com- partment the whole length of the vessel. THE DECKS. ‘Sho bas"three decks, or, counting the bombproof dock of the casemate, she i# a four-lecker, Tho lower docks are of the same thickness as ordinary voasels; but the canomate deck ts mach heavier, while the bombproof dock over the casemate is twenty-one inches thick of wood, with two Inches of plating to cover it. THR OASEMATE. ‘Tho casemate is one hundred and sixty feet long in tho clear, aud i extends the ontice breadth of the vessel Its sides are stoping and over threo fect in thickness. Yhis enormous fort upon deck is pierced for ten heavy guns —three in each broadside and two at each end. Sur- mounting this are to be two tarrete twenty-four fect intornal diameter and Qteen inenes fa thickatss. THE ARMOR PLATING. he subject of armor plating has for some time inte- rested the selentific mon of thtscountry’ns well as thoee of Karope. Hundreds of thousamds of doliara have beeo expended tp experiments, and a largo number of lives wcetdents wh havo resulted at those trials. manufacturers of @tmor plates have studied to per- oct thelr portioa of this great change in the clading of vessels, artilleriste have been at work bringing out ord wince and projectiles to pierce the plates, and at the pre (9 a digpated question ag to which party bas 9 atv antage the plating of the Daaderberg Mr. Webb ts de! «Vict ehe stall rank No. 1, aod Ire has been very wrt outer in eelecting the quality of iron to be used.
