He was born in Dor- gatshive, Ragland, pursued his medical studies in London under the direction of Sir Astley Cooper, and on the re- comineodatoa of that distinguished mau was appointed aq ‘sstuut surgeon in the British oavy. While on bis way (+ the Weat Indies in this capacity be was captured by ove ccucsers aad takea prisoner to Boston, where he roma.aed wotil bis discharge in 1813. During the period ‘of bis detention he became attached to and married & Restoa lady, with whom he went to Nova Scotia, and there pursued tor a while bis profession ag a physi- cian. Gaving, however, a strong bias for literary pursuits, ho got tired of the drudgery of bis practice and removed to New York, where in 1822 he established the Altion, ® journat which, theugh representing English:interests, ovtained through its literary merits an extedsive circula- tiou, Under bis management it was characterized by ability, enterpre and elevation of tone. When steam communication was established between Great Britain and (his country, he founded at Liverpool another paper calied The Huropean, now known as pean Temes. After twenty-five years spest iv the arduous duties of am editorial lile, the insidious approaches of the malady that ultimately killed him compoiled him to seek repose, and he accordingly disposed of bis interest in the Albion. He bad not remained long unemployed, however, when his active mind began to prey on itself, and he felt it a necessity to egiin resume the peo. By the terms of his agreement . with the party to whom he sold his journal, be could not embark in any similar enterprise inNew York. He ac- cordingly went to Boston aad started the Anglo-Sazon, @ weekly somewhat similar to the Albion, but published ata lower price. The speculation did not prove a re- munerative one, and after carrying it on for about a year hs abandoned it. We believe that this was the last en- terpise or the kind with which Dr. Bartlett was associated. Whilst a loyal and conservative subject of hor Majesty, be cever ag @ homey a his obliga- tions to the country that bad afforded him a home, and with which be was copnected by such close family tier. Few mea will leave a void in the social circle than br. Bartlett. He bad @ richly stored mem markabis powers of conversation, and an evenness of cha- fecter that was not easily disturbed. Taurspay, August 27--6 P. M. Money was a little more active to-day. Stocks were unsettled, and thus gave rise to some chang- ing of loans. The rate was no higher, six per differences at 5 and 7. There was no scarcity of money, and all wants were readily satisfied. Busi- ness paper is without change, and currency cer- tificates of indebtedness sold at 9974—an advance of 3¢ on yesterday. Gold was 12414 before the board, and sold up to 1247, at the board. In the course of the day it declined to 12434. The opinion on the street is partly that gold has been oversold, on expecta- tions about the taking of Charleston, and partly that it is worth all that it is selling for—that it is not above its true par. Exchange was unsettled, and sold from 136% to 13%. It has been an exciting day in stocks; the de- cline continued and was very sharp at the first hoard. New York Central sold down to 133, Erie to 1164, Erie preferred to 108, Harlem to 161, Reading to 119, Illinois Central to 131, Michigan Central to 120, Southern old to 102%, Pittsburg to 102, Fort Wayne to 91. The entire list was vio- lently shaken, and bears had a good opportunity to take in their stocks sold short during the past oe two days. It appears that many of them did so, and, although lower prices still were in. some instances reached after the closing of the call, the market soon began to rally, and the recovery this afternoon, both at the one o'clock call and at the regular board, was as rapid as has been seen in Wail street. At the second board New York Cen- tral recovered to 13534, Erie to 118%, pre- ferred to 109, Harlem to 16944, Reading to 121°4, Michigan Central to 122%, Southern old to 106, but afterward sold at 10534; bad sold at 91, and as low as 9014. seller 30, in the morning, opened at 95, and rose to 95%,. street, and at the four P. M. call, the list advanced generally to the extent of % or 1 per cent; but at the hour of writing they had again shown signs of giving way. and uncertainty what is the real character of the market; for even if either side be correct they have not the means of convincing their opponents now. Experienced men vary in their views as much as the novices of speculation; and, while one class points to the rapid rebound of the afternoon as clear proof of the strength and elasticity of the market, the bears ‘assert that the prices attained are a maximum, and that not the rebound, but the decline, is the general and normal tendency of the market, varied only by reactions, which are due to the covering of short sales, and purehases for an immediate profit, Still money is cheap for use, and the bulls have made Profits enough and have large enough margins on cent being what lenders received, with the usual: Illinois Central returned | 200 #hs Canton Co... to 135, Pittburg to 105, and then fell to 104; Rock 4 NY Cent #30 Fe} Island improved to 11374; and Fort Wayne, which | 640 do On the | 300 do.
