THE TROOPS IN OUR CITY. An Immense Army of Occu- pation. Regiments of Infantry, Cavalry and Anillery in the Public Squares. The Sidgaradbens to Enfores the Draft, Read &., &e. The city yostoray wore a very decided military aspect. Soldiers armod in tie completest manner showed them- selves in every quarter, and all the public squares were transformed into camps for newly arrived rogiments, ‘Bent on here epecially for the purpose of preserving order during the draft, which is to take place this week in seve- wal wards of the city. One of our reporters made a tour ‘through the city yesterday, and discovered the presence of an immense force of infantry, cavalry and artillery, Occupying every desirable square aud public ground suit able ‘or camping purposes. THE CITY HALL. In the old City Hall square the appearance of things “Was essoutially warlike. The dreary looking barracks ‘were crowded to their utmost capacity with troops. The ‘Various grass plots were invaded by an army of occups- *tion, and scores of tents of all sizes and shapes were thrown up for the accommodation of the gallant sons of Mars. In fromt of the City Mall the Twenty-second Con- mecticut battery were encamped, and ail the stakes and ‘ehulns were either broken down or impressed into the @ervice of the soldiers for the purpose of securing ‘borses, he. This battery has six splendid pieces— four rifled ana two brass howitzers—which are ‘Delieved to be capable of doing great execution should a ‘Buituble emergency unfortunately arise. Besides this bat- tery, tho Third Wisconsin Volunteers, commanded by Col. Bawley, and the Second Massachusetts Volunteers, com. Mmanded by Colonel Coggswoll, were quartered on the Oyen space immediately in front of the barracks, A ‘Series of spacious tents, each capable of accommodating thirty or forty men, were erected on Saturday evening and yesterday morning, and the soldiers appeared to @pjoy their new quarters much bettcr than those to which they had been accustomed out in Vir- gioia and other sections of the rebel territory. Crowds of people lingered about the barracks and City Hall throughout the day, inspecting the soldiers ‘with a curtous aspect, and talking over the draft with a Certain degree of excitement which indicated resignation rather than a rebellious disposition. TOMPKINS SQUARE. Next in order, proceeding up town, was Tompkins Square, which was the scene of mach interest and excite- ment. The place was completely in the possession of the Milita y, and the usual freedom of passing in and out was denied by vis'l.ut sentries posted at all the gates and en- traces ou aveuue A, Seventh street, avenue B and Ninth Strect, This square is situated in the Seventh district, ‘where the draft is to take place to-day, aud from this fact more than ordinary interest attached to the presence Of the soldiers, The troops quartered in this place con- Bist Oo: the celebrated Twelfth regulars, United States Army. and the Third and, Sixth Vormont Volunteers, be- longing to the Sixth corps of the Army of the Potomac, making a very. large and efficient force, and composed of Some of the most select men in the service. The Tweifth Fe: vlars have distinguished themselves on many asan- @" vary field, apd th Vermont boys are not at all bebind hand in bard earned laurels and glory. Ample accommo- ations have been (urnished for the siceping and culiuary comforts of these troops through the intelligent foresight Of their officers. Up to a late hour last night a high state of excitement ‘was moticeable in the vicinity of Tompkins square. Thou- gancs or men, women and childroa wore constantly on band, and kept the guards just as busy as they could be in endeavoring to out intruders who were constantly fatrivirg to'Mih'the gauntlet of the pickets and sentries. ‘The feminine portion of the crowd gave most trouble to the so'diers, who were often obliged to raise their bayonets and Leioebrtsers: f eet the lines on @ varicty The prsahreriocn AE Irish, Americans, nd representatives of otter Bationalities. The Germans Bppeared to predominate Bérgely, and occupied themaeives Peacetully in discussing the draft. There was no symp. ton of violent qppowition 16 the draft, but the general Sentiment was nevertheless antagonistic. THE MANHATTAN GAS WORKS. Our reporter found {the Manhattan Gas Works, which, » Were quar- tered in that portion of the gas company’s butiding locat- ed on Fourteenth street, to the east of avenue C. Every. ‘thing in the vicinity was in a profound state of tranquil! ty, although the streets were densely crowded with peo- ple. Tho bigh walls surrounding the gas works render the chances of a successful attack very improbable. MADISON BQUARE. This pleasant green spot in the wilderness of houses ex. isting in our metropolis is another of the localities which Dave been selected as camping grounds for the army of occupation. The appearance of things there yesterday was perfectly surprising. The entire square has been turned into @ pasture ground for horses and a dormitory for sol- dicrs. Some two hundred spacious tents have been put up, and strong frame stalls, of substantial construction have been built for the aeoommodation of artillery horses, &c” Ibe troops stationed at this square are the Four- teenth regular infantry, the Fifth Vermont Volunteers ‘and the Seventh Mu sachusetts battery, which has done such valuable service since the outbreak of the rebellion. ‘This battery is commanded by Captain Davis, and con- gists of one hundred and thirty men and six field pieces ©! cighteen inch calibre, The Fourteenth infantry is under the command of Mijor Giddings, an officer who stands weil in the estimation of bis men, They are nearly six hundred strong, and are a fine looking body of soldiers. Everything to Madison square is conducted according to strict military regulations. Pickets, guards, and sentries are posted Inside and outside, and the greatest order and decorum are preserved. Thousands of people ‘wore assembled in and’about the square yesterday, looking at the dress parade of the soldiers and listening to the fine music performed at intervals by the band of the Fourteenth regulars. More troops were expected at this ——ae and Brigadier General Ayers was spoken as (he person to command the ebtire force. LANDMANN'S, OPPOSITE JONES’ WOOD. A very heavy military force was likewise stationed ta {Landmaon’s grounds, located bn Third and Second avenues, just opposite Jones’ Wood. Tle troops in this piace aro all cavalry, and uoder the command of Colonel Mott Their camping ground is weil selected, consisting of a series Of gentla, slopes, shaded by tall which afford pleasant resting spots for the @earied soldiers. The force is made up of detachments from the Fourteenth aad Sixteentn New York cavalry, and smal contributions from other regiments, numbering alto- gether, perhaps, about 1,500 available mon. The scene at Landmann’s yesterday was quite picturesque and fcomantic, The pleasure grounds were crowded with thousands of Germans, who wore indulging in their asual festive games and tibations, Bacchus and Venus ruled eupreme, or, in other words, lager and sparking had full ewig. and the gay votaries of Mars eae right heartily ‘TUS ELEVENTH AND SEVENTEONTH INFANTRY. ‘These two regiments, which lately arrived, were quar tored a short distance from Jones’ Wood,on Seventy Gret street, oxst of the First avenue. The Eleventh and Seventeenth are the old regiments which Generais Heint. voiman and Keyes formeriy commanded. At present the Eleventh is subject to the orders of Major Gordon, and the Sevemteeuth is under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Green. Their camp is well selected, on & cool shady piece of groand, just on the edge of the East river. It will thas be seen that, ladependent of the militia regi- ments and volunteer troops posted in various quarters of the city, in armories and other buildings, General Dix ‘and Provost Marshal Nugent have « tremendous army ‘under their control. The folly and even madness of any attempt at an outbreak is therefore too self-evident to need clveidation. There ie every probabiliy that perfect order will be preserved and that the draft will be euc- _ceastully enforoes. Locomotives, Cars, Depot Buildings, Machine Shops and Ordnance Destroyed, &e, &., és. Memram, August 20, 1863. About two weeks since Major Genoral Hurlbut ascor- tained that there was a large amount of ratlroad stock at Granada which the rebels wero trying to get off South by making temporary repairs on the railroad. With his dhuat euergy and p om iines:, Genayal Hurlbut arranged an expedition to destroy this stock, first sending a request to Gemieral Grant to make a diversion (rom the south to aid 66 enterprise. The expedition started from Lagrange, Tenn., on the 18th, under the commind of Lieutenant Colonel Phil- lige, of the Nineteoa:a Il. ois mounted infantry, and reached Gr.nads on the 17.b, driviag General Slimmer, with two thousand men and three pieces of artillery, from the place. They then destroyed fiity-seveu locomo- tives, upwards of four hundred cars, the depot buildings, machine and blacksmith shops, and a large quantity of ordnance and commissary stores. They captured about fifty raijroad men and a number of other prisoners. After Colonel Phillips had thoroughly accomplished his work, Colonel Winslow, from General Grant's army, ar. rived with a force from below. The expedition returaed to Lagrange to-day. Great praise is due to Colonel Phillips and his gallant command for enduring the hardships of such a march through central Mississippi in mid-August, and for so thoroughly crippling the remaining energy of the rebellion in the Southwest. A bana of guerillas drove in the pickets at Lafayette at midnight. Our boys rallied dud followed them a fow miles, killing four ‘and capturing seven, and returned ‘well satisfied with their midnight adventure.
