We believe that the deposits average is a rising one, and that the actual figure this evening is con- siderably in excess of that which is shown above. On the other hand, the reduction in the loans places the banks in a position of strength, and will compel them this week to seek to extend their discount line for the sake of earning interest on their capital. A good deal of money has been sent to the country during the past two weeks in payment of supplies, &c., for the army. This will mostly come back here before the end of the month. The circulation department of our city banks, which has been of very little consequence under the present law, will become a very impert- ant item when the new banks organized under Mr. Chase’s act go into operation. Money is very abundant; call loans to the brokers range at 56 aG per cent; but several bankmen stated this afternoon that they had been unable to place their means, and the prospect is rather that the rate of interest will fall than that it will rise. Debt certificates advanced this morning 34 of one percent. There is no change in commercial mh) . ki Gold is dull and neglected. The general belief in the fall of Charleston prevents people buying, and the short interest, combined(with the export inquiry, prevents the price falling, It was 125%a % this morning, and at.five o'clock this af- ternoon. Bills are almost nominal; bankers’ rate is 188; but no large amount of bills could be sold at this figure. The wants of the trade are very light, and every ove who can postpone his remit- tances to the other side is doing so, in the belief hat new military and naval enecesses will lead to # fresh decline in the price of exchange. The stock market was vo prices all adyanced considerably, thongh the volume of business wos much lesa than in May or Janufry last. The operations of outside specula- tors are increasing at so moderate a pace that many experienced observers are of the opinion, judging from the volume of bosiness done, that the upward movement is not near its climax yet. At the morning board to-doy New York Central rose 2 per cent, Rrie 144, Hudson 124, Harlem 9, Roading °, Southern old 5, guaranteed 1, Mtinois (. Rock Island 1, Galena 5, ‘Northwestern 2, Terre Haute 1}, Chicago and Alton 2%. As will be seen, the principal advance was in Harlem, Southern old, New York Central, Erie and Fort Wayne. The first moves on principles peculiar to itself; the last mentioned ‘four stocks derive much of their present strength from having been oversold by bear operators on the supposed railroad war. Governments were steady; State stocks aud railroad bonds dull. The lighter fancies were rather neglected. Bucks County Lead fell off) per cent. After the board the murket was very strong indeed, and at the public board at one P.M. the attendance was very large, and the business one large also, Erie rose 4, Central 144, Fort Wayne 2, m 2%, and sn on. The public, who have + the profits of stock speculation, were evidently rushing ia to buy with their old boldaees. At the afternoon session of the board the features of the market were the game, The brokers appeared to have two orders to buy to one to sell, and everything rose in con- sequence. New York Central advanced 2 per cent, Erie 4, Brie preferred 34, Pittsburg 24, Roek Taland 4, Galena %, Harlem 1, &ec., &e. We have never seen the indications of buoyancy more marked, though it is possible that , 48 heretofore, to be y buoyant to-day, and | two stocks atatime. The advance of Central, invited to at- | Reading, Harlem, Hudson, Mlinois Central, &c., to their present prices has made Brie, which is earn- ing a8 much money as any of them, and has great- er prospects inthe future than any Hine in the country, seem comparatively cheap, and it would not be surprising if the force which has been 80 successfully employed in Harlem and old Southern should within a day or two carry Erio up to the price of the other New York roads. After the boord the market was strong, and continued so at the four P.M. call. The tendency at the close was towards increased activity and higher prices. ‘The following were the closing quotations of the day:— y i 118 is Reading...
