FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Turspay, August 11—6 P. M. Everybody was trying to lend money to-day at 6 per cent, and at the close of bank hours more was offered to the brokers at 5 per cent than they could use. The Sub-Treasury is disbursing freely, ‘and is going to disburse large amounts throughout the week. Money is also coming into the city from the intérior towns. Debt certificates are steady but inactive. Mercantile paper sells as be- fore—0 a 5%% for the best names. Gold was 126%{ this morning, and the same price et five P. M., the transactions being qnite small. Exchange was 139 for bankers’ bills. The large purchases of government and railroad stocks which are being made for foreign account exercise con- siderable influence over the exchange market. We presume, from all that we hear among the foreign bankers and the brokers, that Europe is not taking from us less than a million dollars per week of government and other securities. The bulk of these stocks find their way to Germany and Hol- land, though the English are taking back many of the stocks which they sold when the rebellion broke out. The stock market continues only moderately active, the extreme heat operating against speca- lation, At the morning board to-day prices were generally steady. New York Central rose 1 per cent, Hudson 124, Erie preferred 4, Southern old %, Winois Central %, Prairie du Chien 2, Rock Island %{. Erie, Reading, Michigan Central and Galena were steady at the last price of last even- ing. Harlem fell off 134, Fort Wayne %4, Ohicago and Alton preferred 4%. Governments were inac- tive at the last price of yesterday. Missouris fell % per cent, with small sales. There was a rally of 4 in Ohio and Mississippi certificates. At the close of the session the market was inactive, and prices gave way }¢ a4 per cent; but there was Nittle business done atthe decline. At the one P. M. call there was very little disposition to ope- rate, and prices were a shade lower. Dulness continued the feature of the market throughout the afternoon session of the regular Stock Ex- change, and some bear operators took advantage of the absence of outside orders to mark down prices, Jast as they did yesterday afternoon. Thus, Cen- tral fell 134, Erie 4, Illinois %, Galena %, Rock Island %, Fort Wayne 1, &c. The volume of busi- ess done was small, and the sellers were gene- rally regarded as operators for the fall, not as elders realizing. A considerable short interest has been made in the market withinthe past week, andif the money market .remains as it is it will be pretty safe to look for a sharp twist on the general list, such as we have already witnessed in Hodson, Pacific, Harlem, Prairie du Chien and Diinois Central. After the board, and at the four P. M. call, the market recovered strength, and there was a lively demand for Harlem and old flouthern, At the close the whole market was firm, though inactive. The following were the closing quotations of the day:— phe 81 ,reg.105 8 105 ,cou.105 34 a joo $30 2 notes. Mich Southern 21% a ie Mich guar....114%¢ 8 — Toledo, Rock Island. Too a 106s Fort Wayne. 75 a 15% Terre Haute... 10 a 83 846 preferred. ‘Hudson River.100% albl The rumors which have been current in the street for a day or two of a disagreement between the trunk lines are without foundation. We have the best authority for stating that the relations be- tween the Central and Erie were never more har- monious. The rumors alluded to probably arose from the circumstance that the Canada roads have refused to bear their share of the expense of a gene- ral passenger agency in each of the great sea- board cities, and that, in consequence, the plan will probably have to be abandoned, ahd each road have its separate agents, as heretofore. The business of the Sub-Treasury was fs follows “nee eb'tar‘aat a6 The Naugatuck Railroad Company have declar- ed asemi-annual dividend of four per cent, free from tax, payable on the 15th instant. The earnings of the Hudson River Railroad for July were as follows :. The statement of the Philadelphia banks for the week ending on Monday was as follows :— This compares with the statements of the pre- vious three weeks as follows :— Circula'n, ts, The First National Bank of Newark commenced Dusiness on the 6th inst., using for the present the notes of the Shoe and Leather Bank of this city. The Comptroller of the Currency will not be able for some weeks, probably, to supply the national bank currency to the various banks organized under the new law. Mr. Cisco gives notice to those who hold thirty @ more 7.30 coupons, maturing 19th inst., to hand them in with schedules before that date. On the 18th inst., after three P. M., the usual checks for the examined coupons will be given, as usual, at the Sub-Treasury.
