J. Craven, Chicf Medical vilicer; Dr. f. 2. Dibbie, Surgeon Of the Sixth Connecticut, detached wa his assist: ant; and the aunerous corpe of regtineutal and ovher sar. geons. The wounded, in an unexpectedly large number Wore, @8 promptly as possible, removed on stretchers and in ambulances to the main hospital, near Light house Inlet, either directly or by ea dangerously wounded were temporarily atiended to at intermediate hospitals, where temporary relief was afford- ed. By morning nearly every wounded man had been ri moved to one Of the hospital boats, and was on his way to the fine hospitals at Hwa Head and Beaufort. A few wounded ones, too much burt to be heard, and too mueh hidden to be found in she darkness, remained on the ground till morning. Yesterday Dr. Craven reported officially to General Gti. more that the whole number of wounded which bad passed through his hands on the island was six hundred and twenty-five. Some of our wounded, a9 weil as dead, fei into the hands of the enemy, The ambulance corps deserve especial mention. Mr. Jehn Nevill, chief wagon master, and Mr. Martin G. Clark, his assistant, had charge of this department. They bad seven ambulances, which were kept constantly running, and stretchors also wore brought into requisition, till every wounded mun was cared fer. DURING OF THE DEAD, Early Tuesday morning burial parties, by permission of the euemy, went down to bury our dead, outside the rebel works. The bedies had to be interred uncoffined, with. ous being identified; but such are the fortunes of war. CONVERSATION WITH REBEL OFFICENS. Several rebol officers camo out of tho fort during the burying and conversed with tho officers in charge of our parties. They complimented our troops in tho highest manner. They said thetr charges were #0 determined aud vigorous that it was almost impossible to stand be- fore them, Atone time they anticipated being driven from the (ort. When the fight commencea on the 10th they scarcely expected to hold the fort all day; but new they said they intended to keep possession of 8. They were very bitter on the negro troops, and said such as they had captured would be sold at auction. ATIEMYT TO RKCOVAR COLONML PUTNAM’S BODY. On Bunday morning Lieutenant Colonel Abbott went down with a flag of truce, having learned that Colonel Putnam was positively dead, and mado arrangements for hie body to be forwarded. He received some letters which had been taken from Colonel Putnam’s porson. A body was disinterred and sent down to the camp ef the Seventh Now Hampshire; but ft proved afterwards not to be Colonel Putonm's, although there was a most striking resemblance, which doubtless led to the errer. The body was not identified, and at night was burried om a land bluff. It will probavly be impossible to recover Colanel Putnam’s body. ANOTHER ¥LAG OF TRUCE. On Monday Lieutenant Beo, wo was captured by us, severely wounded, in the engagement of the Leth, died in our hospital, Last evening Dr. Craven, chief medical officer; Lieutenaat Colonel Hull, provost marshal, and General Vogdes went with a flag of truce to return the body. They were met first by Captain Tracey, and after- wards by General Heygood and Colonel Cates, formerly member of Congress. They had a very pleasing inter- view, and talked quite freely on some points. “We in- tend to be a great nation yet,” said they. “We think we can live without you; but you show your weakness by declaring you cannot live without us.” ‘That was their principal point. They also complained about tho negro soldiers, urging tbat it was unchivalrous to sond hegroes lo Hyht gentlemen, One important result of the interview was a mutual agreement for the geveral ex change of wounded prisoners. The .Comopoiitan will take ay the wounded revels to & point near Fort Sumter, and there be met by # rebel steamer with our wounded ea board, when an exchange will take place. OPERATIONS #INCH FATURDAT. Sunday wana very quiet day. Both sides were very busily engaged with bomane occupation, burying doud, taking care of wounded and recovering trom the fight On Monday there was quite a bombardment of Wagner by the gunbcats and batteries, On Tuesday @ little can- nowadiog was doue, but bad no casualties. SRW Ren, BATTERS. ‘The cebdels have built three large batteries on James Island, and with one of them they on Tuesday opened an eniliading fro on our works. Traver.ce were speodily erected. There were no cagualtios. A SHOT AT BUMTER.
