The following 1s the official report of the loca- ition of the rocks:— 1. The rock off Montauk Point, upon which the steamer “Groat Eastern struck, has been fixed by Lieutenant Com- mander 1, 8, Phelps, United States Navy, Assistant Coast Survey. It lies east three-quarters north, by compass (north 74 deg. east, true), from Montauk Votbt lighthouse, distant vone and a half nautical miles, and has four futhoms water on it «t mean low water, 2. Auother rock was also found, lying northeast by east ‘Dall east, by compass, from the lighthouse, distant pearly ‘one and a half miles, on which there are four and three-quarters fathoms of water at mean low water. On ‘the next side of this rock, close to it, the depth is eight fathows. The twe rocks lie southeast by south half south, and @orthwest by north half north, from each other, distant aif a vautical mile, with from six to seven tuthoms ‘water between them. No. Lof these rocks lies nearly in the middle of the Gouthern otge of a bank a quarter of a mile wide, with from five to six fathoms water on it, and running from “the rock Poreh serpunas By. .—— half a mile. No 2 lies near the south ang! of 4 triangular bank. with from five to six fathoms water on it, running @ quar- “ter of a mile north by west, and one-eighth of a mile gouth by east, and five eighths of a mile , by compass, from the rock. Both of these bunks are bard and rocky. the time of her capture she was some one hundred and fifty miles from land; when first discovered by the Mem- phis but fifty or sixty miles. The Ouachita was owned by T. S. Begbie, a British subject, claimant, and com, manded by T. 8. Gilpin, also a British subject. She was & screw steamer of about fifty tons burden. Her voyage was from London to Havana. Sbe left in ballast in August, 1862, and stopped at Bermuda, St. Georges, where she took in & cargo of arms and ammunition for Nassau, consigned resident there named ‘The had The Late Intense Excitement in im Opposition to the Draftt—Restoration eve from Hart to the master, received by him wi it Ber. muda, in which the writer says that he has been advivert by the owner, Begbie, that the vessel would touch at that and pointing out to the master the difficulties of escaplog the United States vessels or war in the pasage to Nassau and how to avoid them. When the master left London, some letiers were delivered to him by the owner, which on opening he found were instruc- tions to report to a person ef the name of Bowne, ‘at Bermuda, and be would sugply bim with whatever was veedful. Another letter an Introduction to Hart, of Nassau, and also of like purport of the one to Bowne. Bowne w. ipper of the arms and ammuoi- tion on board the vessel at Bermuda for Nassau, There were no bills of lading or invoice or otber papers, except registers, shipping of men and clear: usual in casos of a bona fide ent. Verbal i ven by Bowne to the master to iuliow tat Nassau, both as to vessel and cargo. ‘There were some thirty-flve tons measurement of cargo of arms and ammunition. Soon after the discovery of the United States war steamer Memphis, on the morning of the 14th October, the day of capture, the Ouachita changed. her course to the eastward; and some hours after, finding the Memphis gained ou ber, the master gave orders to throw the whole of the cargo overboard, which was done, with the hope ot escaping, but was overtaken and captured about four o'clock P.M. The master further states that under command of Com Wilkes ‘and ercaped by runing his ves sel among tho reefs. One of the crew—E. Young—first @ cook on board, and afterward a hand before the mast, testifies that the Ouachita was bound from Bermuda for Charleston, 8. C., and that the cargo consisted of Fnficid cartridges, rifles and gun caps; that the master apnlied to him and others of the crew to ign a paper, by which to agree to run the blockade at Charleston, and offered £8 sterling if the vessel ran clear, and if not, three montha’ pay after capture, Weconour with the Court below in the condemnation. It is impossible to doubt, uvon the Proofs, but that the cargo was put on bowrd the Ouachita with the intention of running the blockade of the South- ern coust of tho Confederate States, and especially the bioc:ade of the port of Charleston, The voyage from Rermuda to Havana was but @ pretext. The vesset whea captured was some six degrees north of Bermuda, and, when first chased, within fifty or sixty miles of the coast Jt 18 quite apparent that this was not in a course which would carry the vessel to Nassan or Havana. The }roofs also sho.« that Begbie. the owner,-was privy and, doubtless, originated the adventure. Decree below af firmed, The Brig Sarah Star Cargo va. the United States, Neison, C.
