The fourth night since the beginning of the trouble closed Jn upon the first day on whieh the city was occupied by ® military force sufficiently numerous to cope with the populace at all points; yet there was, last evening, little ‘or no confidence that the spirit of the opposition was Droken, or that the people were overawed. The mhabi- tants of the metropo'ls prepared for another night of Dioodshed, arson aud phunderings. The really serious work of the afternoon on the east side of the city, and the current rumors of terrible fighting, ending tn the triumph of the multitude, were sufficient to ratse the excitement to the highest point, perhaps, that it has yot reached; a a, the effect on the peaceable inhabitants of ‘the disirict occupied by the military, the police and the crowds was most painful. APPEARANCE OF THE CITY—THE STORM AND THE DARKNESS. One of the strangest of the phenomena brought about by tho disturbances was particularly noticeable. This ity, which ordinarily wears its brightest aspect early on the biackest nights, was last evening utterly changed in Me appearance: the stores and dwellings which had re- Mained open during tho day were, with few exceptions, closed at nightfall; and to the rainstorm which prevailed, the unusual darkness of the night, and the forbodings of the majority of the inhabitants in regard vo tho appre- hended troubles are owing the gloominess of the time, which has bad vo paraliel. The sokliors became exasperated at this sight, and vowed deep vengeance on the perpetrators of the act. But the crowd, animated by the feeting which desperation alone can infuse, no sooner perceived the soldiers than they commenced firing upon them from every available point. The battery unlimbered and placed their pieces in position, which had the effect of tiara a pumber of iadies and children who crowded the stoope and win- dows.
