_ NEWS FROM THE SOUTHWEST. THE SURRENDER AT VICKSDURG. One Lieutenant General, Four Major Generals and Twen- ty Brigadiers Captured. ‘The Garrison Compesed of Twenty Thousand Men, DETAILS OF OPERATIONS 10 JUNE 30, PEMBERTON’S DESPERATE DESIGNS, Kary Ren he Curcrxnati, July 10, 1868. ‘Tho Casete’s Vicksburg correspondent says tisk sassag the officers captured are one lieutenant general, four ‘major generals and between fifteen and twenty brigadier @onerals. ‘Tho garrison comprised 20,000 men. * H. Farrell’s Despatch. ‘THIRTEENTH ARMY CoRrs, Nuaz Vicksruna, Miss., June 30, 1863. OPERATIONS TO JUNK 30. The operations of this corps—the left wing of the ‘Srmy—for the last twenty-four hours has been confined to ‘@ desultory cannonade from our side, meoting little or no feply from the enemy. EFFECT OF OUR ARTILLERY IRE. Early yesterday morning the rebels opened fire from a Dew sixty-four pounder gum on the right of this corps. ‘The vigilance of the gunners in our batteries, who fired ®t the embrasure of the rebel work as soon ‘as the muzzle of the gun was in sight, prevented tho ‘enemy from taking aim. They were therefore obliged to fre “blind,” the shot going over the desired mark at least two miles, Tue attempt to fire this piece ‘was repeated several times with similar result. This morning the rebels opened a brisk fire with light artillery from a new battery on the Jackson and Vicksburg road. The fire of one of the batteries manned by the First United States artillery was concentrated upon it, and Stlenced it within baif‘an hour. Lauma. 18 woucting more gups on his division -front. The battery has been coustructed under the immediate supervision of Gen. Herron, assisted by Capt. Alexander, 0! wing Engiveer gorns Mvor White (son of ex-Judge White, New York city), of the Ordnance De- t, aid’ Maor Murphy (iret Miesouri artillory), ~chief of ‘artillery. CAITURK OF REBEL CON OX 8 Last night seven prisoners belonging to the Seventh Arkanpas regiment were captured on General Herron’s front. One of them was a lieutenant, who says that bis Togiment are couscripts; that bis regiment, io common wwikh others of Pembertwn's army, are much reduced on ‘wcoount of casualities, improper medical treatment and short rations; for the last three days they have been on eal rations, and that the ration of flour is so small 93 to make not more than one biscuit. He also says that our artiliery bias been making havoc among the rebels, and that nearly all the rank sod file would desert or sur- render did the opyortunity present itself, This officer also puts the of July as the longest poss.ble time for hold ous. The rebels are algo sdort of are NAVAL CO OPERATION. “This morning the gunboats Benton and Carondolet ‘Opened a brick fire on She lower water batteries. The cannonade was continued for threo hours, with good - from our side, The rebels replied at long inter. vals. a Mr. Cha: PRMHERTON’S DESIGNS, It is stated by dene o! the prisovers that have come pabeye our lines that Pemberton degigns expending the t shot betore he surrenders, and that tn doing this be ill make a de=perate at'em;t to escape through the left of our line. Time praeee ll thie all things. Our Cairo | Correspongence. Fee fy, ae 1863, Wut 4 COUT LEAitvED. One of General Grant’s scouts, who goes home on leave of absence for a few days, bas just passed through Cairo en route for lowa. From tim I learn some rather inte- sweating particulars of the condjtion of rebeldom generally ‘end of General Johnston’s army in particular. Johnston is organizing his army. He has now about fifty thousand men, « good proportion being of the cavalry army—about one sixth of his entire force—and has aot to exceed forty pieces of artillery. The cavalry are well armed; but their show of horse flesh, as the scout expressed {t, ‘is mighty slim.” Their animals are dn poor flesh, and were never, in their most palmy days, ‘wnything to boast of. Jackson is in commund of the cavairy new stationed at Satartia on the Yazoo river, and at Vernon, afew miies ‘rom the Black river. The whole force extends a distance of twelve or fifteen miles up and down the country. General Loring is tn the Flack river, at a point where ‘the road from | anton to Vicksburg cros-es that stream. Andervon, als» in command of a potion of Jehnst Torce, oa vsed to be statioued on the Mobile and Mis. eissippi Rai rowd. This is the condition and position, so far as the scout, by a long and tiresome trip of ever a hundred miles into the enemy's count-y, could learn it, of tue entire rebel force soon to be brought into action against our troops under General W. T. Sherman, Johnston, it is now understood, is really to make an attempt—and a deaverate attempt it will be—to raise the Giege of Vicksburg and relieve the rebels penned in under Pemberton. The feeling is, that if Vicksburg falls the entire rebel canse has gone io the dogs. Many of their officers swear solemp oaths if the doomed city does {all they will resign their commissions. The next move— already calculated by the rebels—in the event of the loss is to fail back upon Montgomery, Ala., as ile will have to follow burg PRICRS IN DIXIE. From the following rates paid for some of the levding articles of home consumption, it would appear to the on initiated that housekeeping in Dixic was one of the most difficult ag weil as most expensive of luxuries. What would our boarding house keepers think of paying one doliar per pound for poor flour, seventy-five ceuts for dark, wot, sugar; corn $2 10 bushel, corn meal $5. Why it would be killing upon purse. ‘Then your Feotonta who worth wear socks mrust pay $5 per pair them. Your Indy who could afford a calico wrapper must give $8 @ yard jor the cheapest, most common stuff. YOMTION AT REAK OF VICKSH’ RA. “Thore was Wo change of im) ortance to note in the posi- tion of affairs in General Logan’s front, stoce the partial ion of Fort Hill, when my informant left the field, the Tien ult. Logan still held bis ground, apd wea wo beavy guns in petition, ready to give the enemy slumbia, He war also sapping their foundations pre yperatory to another blow-up, which it was expected ‘would come off on the night of the 29¢b. Geo -Horron was wraduaily getting nearer the position ‘he desired to ovcupy. On the aS the 28th. the revels mada a derperate attempt to*break through as and rate biv lines, hoping to escape, but they were Tepulsed with some loxs and made to go into toate | Kennels again. It is undoubtedly at this point, if any, the rebels think they cau break through and engage the full Union forces. We have been without news from anywhere for quite along time. The blockade of the Southern coast is now 80 strict that the arrival of a vessel from any point there is a rarity. One only, @ little schooner, has come in from somewhere in Florida a few days since; but she dia not bring us @ word of news, The Britiab mail steamer from Vera Cruz will probably not arrive bere until to morrow or the day after, and sho will have nothing for us but a lot of details about affairs in Moxico city, &c. All eyesaro anxiously turned northward in auxious expectation that the drama there is drawing to a close. The mercantile community is whoily and solely desirous of peace in whatsoever form it may. come; and I am quite sure wany of your merchants, especially those who have traded with Havena, are no less anxious for a termination of the war. In the meantime England is reaping @ golden harvest. Ordors, which were formerly filled in the States, are now sent to fngland, and it is no exaggeration to say that the ontire current of trade flows gradually in the same direction, Manufacturers got hardware of all kinds, glassware, paper, and a multitude of articles in the United States aro unable to Mil orders for want of bands, and I know in- stances where such orders have boen countermanded there and sent to England. The want of hands, which must be severely felt ia your factories, and the insecurity of American shipping, are slowly but surely undermining the vast trade upon which your large cities depend. You must nccept these tact; and believe them, whether you will or not. Jn regard to England, her import and export trade wore never so flourishing as at present, as you will perceive from the published official statements. This is one of the natural consequences of the civil war, and it is 20 wonder that England would rather you would keep it up. Those hypocritical meetings gotten up in Manchester ant elso- where in favor of the Northern States are with the sole view of stimulating you to continue. The engineer now in charge is a Mr. Lyons; but 1 donot know whether be is American or English. Matters in Havana are dull enough. We are to have some much needed reforms in our courts of justice, the attention of the Captain General having been directed to some crying abuses of chronic standing. It is said that, under the old system, now tw be changed if possible, no cause could be gained without bribing the Judges abd officials of the court. In such astate of things man stands no chance of having truth of this and other grave cbarces, local judiciary, is apparently substantiated ‘by an article in the Diario dela Marina, which admits the existence of gross corruption, and heartily approves the inteuded reform, which will add new lustre \o the name of Gene- ral Duleo.
