Thus far the old La Crosse hae'had the best:ofi@he contest. Ite earnings for the peast-six months show an in- crease of $117,000 over Jast year, while those of the Prairie du Chien show a-Hecrease of some $60,000. Tt seems likely that the ‘St. Paul'line will continue to gain upon its opponent. Tke-attempt which was lately made by the Brairie duChien to secure an extension of ita line through Northern Jowa into Minnesota has failed:and'been abandoned for the present, while, om the-other hand, the St. Pan! road is building a line ‘from St. 'Peul to Owatonia, where it will connect with the ‘line now in course of construction from that point to Winona, and will drain, for the exclusive benefit of the St. Paul road, a region which last year furnished one- fourth of all the wheat that was received at Mil- wankee. Meanwhile the St. Paul line controls all, or nearly all, the boats on ithe upper Missis- sippi; so that altogether the prospect of traffic this summer on the Prairie da Chien line, especial- ly as there is no bocal crep on the road, isnot very encouraging, and helders of the preferred stock are feeling nervous about their dividends. The business of the Sub-Treasuny wases follows to-day: We learn that a new issue of legal tender notes, one or two years to run, and bearing interest, may be expected about Ist of August. ‘The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $60,211,015 04, and the balances $2,229,896 54.
