The Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad Company advertise for proposals to construct twenty-eight miles of road from Columbus to Portage City, Wisconsin. The construction of this road gives them a good clsim to the lands donated by Con- gress to the late La Crosse Raitroad Company, and also a through route from Chicago and Mil- watikee to the Mississippi river, independent of the Bastern division of the late La Crosse Rail- road. The Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad Com- pany is the successor of the late La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad Company, the Milwaukee and Western Railroad Company (commonly called the Watertown road), and the Milwaukee and the Ho- ricon Railroad Company. They own all the rall- ing stock and equipments of the above companies, and operate their whole lines of road—three hun- dred and forty-six miles in all. Of this three hun: dred and forty-six miles the St. Paul Company owns absolutely two hundred and fifty-one miles, including the twenty-eight miles to be built.
