It is consequently the dullest period of the year in amusement circles. Niblo’s Garden and the two Bowery theatres are thé only regular dramatic establish- ments open to the public. He will give light pieces the first week, and will shortly produce a burlesque of “Leab,” with bimself, Pearson, Setchell and Miss Emily Thorne iv the'cast. It will be hard to burlesque ‘‘Leah,’” as recently performed at Niblo’s Garden; but these are undosbted'y the artists to try. Our only fear is that by that time the veather will be too warm for people to laugh comfortably. ES FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sunpay, June 28, 1863, The money market was much easier last week than the week before, though the Sub-Treasury balance rather increased than diminished. The change arose from the influx of money from the country, At this season of the year the country balances in our city banks always increase, and when money commands a high price the increase is naturally more rapid and larger than would otherwise be the case, At present, in Wall street, money is worth 6.47 per cent per annum on call on undoubted security, which is considerably more than the bankers in the rural cities can get for their means. Old fashioned capitalists, who pre- fer the paper of merchants in good credit to other temporary investments, find it impossible to get 6 per cent for their money; the competi: tion for first class paper has caused it to rule at5a5\%. Debt certificates, new issue, in- erest and principal payable in currency, sell at 1% a1, discount. It was rumored some time ago that the Treasury Department was issuing these certificates with @ sparing hand, and was paying an unusual amount of claims in currency, It has not appeared, however, that the supply of certi- ficates in market has diminished in any sensible degree After the Ist proximo large amounts of money will Jisbursed in dividends, and df, as is expected, the Secretary of the Treasury makes no change in his policy, but merely announces thas he will continue to receive currency in subscription for five-twenty bonds at par, there is every reagon to believe that the money market will rule easy throughout the fall months, Gold was singularly inactive last week, con. sidering the exciting character of the military in. telligence. It sold at one time as high as 14514, but did not remain there long, and closed last evening at about the price at which it had rated during the | NEW YORK HERALD, MCN AY, JUNE 2¥, 1863. | greater part of the week—144% a 145. Exchange rose at one tiine to 159, but could not be’ maititain- e@at that point. Yesterday, at the close of busi- ess, the eestablished rate for bunkers" bille was 16734 a 158. Considerable surprise has been ex- pressed at the dullness of gold and exchange in the face of news which might fairly have been ex- pected to shake public oonfdence in the currency. But the fact is no one in tiis meridian appears to feel the slightest concern about the operations of General Lee in Southern Pennsylvania and Mary- land. Whether it is that people are satisfied that the rebels will make nothiig by thé invasion of the North, or whether—which is perhaps the true secret—the public are convinced that whatever temporary repulses may be encountered and whatever disasters-endurea, the United States are capable of suppressing and determined to sup- press the Southern ineurrection, certain it is that the alarm and uneasiness which, four and five months ago, enabled the copperhead gold gamblers to carry the price of the precious metalup to 173 have entirely disappeared, and no one now seems to have courage enough to buy fifty, thousand gold for the rise ‘at any price, ‘The ‘fact, is the more significant as. we are om the eve of a further expansion of paper credit which will be scardely less marked in ite effect than the issue of legal tender currency. Mr. Comptroller McCulloch has‘just rettrned to Wash- ington after a somewhat extended tourthroughout the Joyal States. He has satisfed himself that by New Year #'very large number of banks will. be started under Secretary Chase’s act, and by.next summer the. full: amount of currency authorized under that act—vis: $800,000,000—will'be afloat. The talk of a great bank at New York, with $20,000,000 capital, continues active; but we have not heard that.any practical steps have yet been taken towards its organization. | The following table shows'the course of the stock | market for the past week and month:— 13. The movement is regarded in some quarters as a street “corner; but we learn that the heavy holders have been all. along free lenders of cash stock. In Harlem-the movement was still more remarkable. On the un- derstanding that the Common } Council would? pass resolutions rescinding the Broadway Railroad grant to the Harlem Company, short sales of severah, thousand shares—it is said as many, nc) sand shares—were made by partic misfortune to % in the ae Under ‘ the pressure of sales e was de- pressed on a evening “to 72. sper cent. On Friday motning the newspapers pub- lished the resolutions of. the Council, and that day |. the stock rose ‘to 97 per cent, and y iy to 106. It is understood | that the short sel vhave make terms with without success. If, ir triumphant is be true there is at members of the board, re: corner in Has lem.in.the old times in Wik the stock rose something like 250. Whether Cointiodore'Vs who can recall the history of this almost for- gotten passage in Wall street's history will be able to say. ‘The price of other leading shares has not varied much, during the past week. Central and Erie are firm. It is understood that besides a regular dividend on the former of 31% per cent, an extra dividend of either 1% or 2% will be paid in August. It is now con- ceded on every side that 334 per cent will be paid on Erie old, and many stockholders expect 6 per cent. The feeling of holders is thoroughly aroused, and it will not be safe for the management to trifle with them, if there was any desire todo so. Pitts- burg has been dull and neglected, partly on the raid into Pennsylvania. Nothing has been deter- mined respecting the dividend; but a large body of stockholders will be greatly disappointed if no dividend be declared on the Ist. The Michigan Central dividend gives general satis‘action. The Michigan Southern directors have declared five per cent on the guaranteed stock, payable Ist of Au- gust; they will have over $150,000 on hand after pay oe the dividend. European advices report an active inquiry forand considerable business in Illinois Central stock. The English, who are the leading holders of this property, appear to be awakening to the fact that the original theory upon which the road’ was constructed is being demonstrated, and that within a limited period of time the stockholders will own the whole line, seven hundred miles long, free of debt, besides an amount of land nearly equal in value to the road. The entire debt at present is about $14,500,000, against which the company holds about $11,500,000 of land notes secured by mortgage on improved lands. The land sales are progressing at about the rate of $1,100,000 per an- num; so that in avery short time the interest on land notes will defray the entire charge for interest on bonds, and the capital of the bonds will oq paid off by the payment of maturing land notes. In view of the present position and commanding future of the State of Illinois, it is safe to say that when the debt of the Illinois Central is paid off or balanced by mortgages to an equal amount there will be no such railway property in the country as the stock of that line. During the last fiscal year the traf- ficshowed an increase over the previous year of $546,213; during the current year the increase over last year for eight months is $768,519, and for the whole year will be over a million of dol- lars, and perhaps $1,200,000. The best index to the present prosperity and future prospects of the property is, perhaps, after all, to be found in the actual cash receipts for lands sold. In the first eight months of the fiscal year 1861-'62 the re- ceipts on this account were $191,098; during the corresponding period of the current fiscal year the company received in cash $719,717. The speculation in gold mines, which is raging so wildly in California, and in which fortunes are made and lost in a day, is at length spreading to this meridian. We hear of several California mines which are to be introduced upon our board, and one or two similar schemes, based on mines in Colorado and Nevada, are likewise talked about. We have received prospectuses of various new mining companies of those regions, and it is probable that speculators will by and by have a | 2 of making and losing money in these light | ‘ancy stocks. The imports, other than dry goods and specie, at the port of New York for the week ending Jane 26, 1863, were $1,813,982. CITY COMMERCIAL REPORT.
