It appears that while the ladies and gentlemen were dining on board, be was busy taking notes; so, while they wore duncing. for he has sinee sworn to an affidavit at an attorney § vitice in Stockton, setting forth, inter alia, that Captain Butcher (the gentleman in charge of the heat) was, in bis belief, a regular comtuissioned offiver under the coniederacy, because he had detected the letters (. Para, June 11 Salvos of artillery were petal to-day ‘at the Tuill celebration of the captu 1863. leries in FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Taorspar, June 25~6 P. M. The money market was easy to-day, though some bankers went through the form of calling in their loans this morning. On call money was worth 6 a7 per cent, with about many loans at the lower as the higher figure. At the close of bank hours we heard of.many parties who were unable to lend their money. There is no change in com- mercial paper or debt certificates. Gold was better to-day. Itrose to 145% at the second board, closing at five P.M. at about 144%. Exchange was 168 a 169, with not much activity. ‘Che alarming statements of the evening papers respecting the rebel advance into Maryland would have caused a substantial advance in gold in any other condition of the market. As it is, no one has any courage to buy gold on speculation; no one seems to want to hoard coin; and thus, in the absence of any inquiry, the price, whenever buoyed up by adverse news, only preludes a fur- ther decline. The stock market opened with great strength this morning, and before the board Erie sold at 97, Harlem at 8334, Hudson at 138, When the brokers met, however, at the morning board, a fierce and very skifful attack was made onthe leading shares, which was assisted by the pecullar maneuvre im Harlem, and was attended with pretty general success. At an early hour of the day it transpired that the members of the Common Council, who tasted the profits of stock specula- tion on the occasion of the grant of the Broadway Railroad to the Harlem Company some weeks since, were athirst for further profits, and that a thimble-rigging scheme with this view would be attempted to-day. Accordingly, at four P. M. to-day, the Board of Councilmen passed a resolu- tion rescinding the grant of the Broadway Rail- road to the Harlem Company. Practically, of course, the Common Council might just as well have rescinded the charter of the Erie Railroad Company or the constitution of the State of New York. Under the recent grant the Harlem Com- pany have acquired vested rights which the Com- mon Council haye no more power to disturb than the Pope of Rome. But the object of members in passing the resolution being not to disturb the rights of the company, but simply! to de- press the stock for the purpose of buying in again at a low price, and selling out at a high one, the proceeding wae really less absurd than it would otherwise seem. It had the effect to-day of putting down the price from 83 to 72%. Rumor states that the President of the com- pany, Commodore Vanderbilt, warned the mem- bers of the Council of the folly of their trick, and predicted that they would lose more than they would make by it. But they would have their way, and Wall street now knows that, if it chooses to corner Harlem, the Aldermen and Councilmen and their sporting friends are short enough of the stock to insure its rising to 125, if the corner be managed as skilfully as Hudson River hasbeen. The general market sympathized more or lees with Harlem, Hudson fell to 131—a decline of 7 per cent~ closing at133, Erie sold*us low as 9424—a decline of 24— closing at 95},. The Western shares were all lower, without much activity. Cumberland de- clined 3 per cent. Governments were steady at the morning session, but lower afterwards; in the af- ternoon they sold at 109%, for the coupons of 1881, At the close to-day the market was rather dull, the upward impulse having received a check from the decline in Harlem, The Mowing were the closing quotations of the —.
