2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sumpay, June 7, 1863. y market was rather active lastweek, juence of the large and very singu- Jation of money in the Sub-Treasury, erted attempt on the part lenders to obtain higher rates of in- ter attempt would have been attended fact that ope mely dull, are froma con v very Jitu success but for th + ext just now to carry t while ators in stocks ‘ and carrying lerge amounts of wd low-priced seeusities on which the lenders do not ‘care to lend at ' » point of fact, the supply of money is*and , 4| along in excess of the demand, Yes- y mor ong every one was anxious to make bis i sccount goed at an carly hour, and at eleven and te o'clock mon was worth seven, op twoand three P. M. the demand fell off 4 o4-ther, and money was freely offered at six, v yut takers, Jn view of the disbursements of id the larg rease of money and © paper securi such as debt certiti- ! s impossible that any stringeney in the mrrket can last for more than a day or two pecially as periods of activity on the ixchange are invariably followed, as at pre- periods of duiness, during which but few of kera ave borrowers. Debt certificates con- * pretty steady at | pet cent discount for the sone, and 144 a %4 premium for the old. Mercantile paper is searce; prime names sell at 514.4 64 per cent, good mercantile paperfat 6 a Tas (iold was rather more asetive list week; bat toere was little spirit in the speculation for the rise, it sold as high as 14324 and as Jow as 14424, closing last evening at about 1 Exchange con- tinues dull. Trade is stagnant, and there is little or no inquiry for bills among importers, while the large exports of produce from this port and of specie from San Francisco keep the market well supplied with exchange. At the close yesterday 157 a % was about a fair quotation for bankers’ bitts, Operations—invariably for the rise—cof- tinue to be made in gold and exchange, for ac- count of the parties whose headquarters are at Buaitimore and Washington, and whose sympathies are generally supposed to be with the rebels; but disappoifftment and loss have latterly invariably attended their ventures. No bad news, however distressing to loyal men, seems capable of put- ting up the price of gold and keeping it up. With the exception of a few foreign mer- chaats, who do not understand the position of this country, and cannot gauge its resources, no one now cares to hoard cele. Neither banka nor bankers are willing to lend over par upon it, and but few chartered institutions care about lending at all to speculators in the deprecia- tion of the national currency. The sicady progress of conversions is convincing every one that, under any eveut, the government paper will be good for its faco, and that the experience of foreign na- tious, with no resources, no immigration and no steady supply of bullion, is no guide whatever for the course of events in this country. If Vieksburg and Port Hudson fall it will be safe to look for a severe decline in gold and bills. ‘Che following table shows the course of the stock market for the past week and month:— May 9. bie May 25. ee ee nent mone ta new st U.S. 6a, regiat’d 1065; Virgo! 65 Tonnenaces. Yesterday was a very dull.day, though at the close there was rather.a betteringuiry. Erie, which ia the *best criterion of the market, sold as high as 9854, and as low as 95, last week, closing yesterday at about 96%. Pittsburg w: high a8 95, and as low as 89; it closed yesterday at about 902%. Operators appear generally to be holding off, partly in ¢onsequence of the opera- tions before Vicksburg, and Partly becanse | many of them have realized’ large pro- fits, and are thinking of enjoying them. Within a month or two some of the heavies: operators have withdrawn from the street. Their absence could not failto be felt. In course of time new apeculators will succeed them, with bold- ness and capacity not less than theirs ; bot until they arise it is natural that the volume of business should be less than it was. The general princi- ples which govern the market lave undergone no change, Whether Vicksburg falls or no, so long asthe war is prosecuted on a paper basis, and government continues to expend $2,000,000 day, the inevitable tendency must be toward increased traffic on the railways, and consequently increased dividends on railway stocks and increased prices for railway shares. Wall street has made its mind up to a decline in stocks if Vicksburg falls, and the presumption is that what every one oxpects will be made to come true. But the fall of Vicksburg would not diminish the business which has been created by the issue of paper money, aud the only effect of a decline in prices would be that the old street operators, who have been out of stocks for some time, would have an opportunity of buying in again at low figures. The earnings of the roads for May show an increase of from 25 to 50 per ceut. The Erie earnings, which will not be published before the 15th, will probably show an increase but slightly less than that of April, and will render it certain that the company will have considerably over a million dollars ou hand applicable to dividends, after pay- Ing interest, expenses and 344 per cent on the pre ferred stock, on the Ist July. There is teas epecn- lation than there was in the stocks which are ata premium. Experience teaches that in times like theae there is more money to be made in buying cheap stocks than high priced ones. The largest fortunes which have been realized within the post eighteen months have been made in the stocks and bouds of reorganized railroads, which have been made good by the general increase of rail- way traffic. It may safely be taken for granted that the stocks of all roads which last year were able to pay interest on their bonds are going thie year tocarna dividend, and if not too high now are pretty sure to advance in market value, The stockholders’ meeting of the Cleveland and Pittaburg, which will be held on the Ist prox'me, will be one of the most important railroad meet ings ever held in this country. The submitted to the stockholde they will avail themselves of the ratlroad act of the State of Ohio and grant to their bondholders ti e privilege of converting their bonds into stock, iuestion to be whether or no Ae | the bonds are selling at 1 }10, while the stock | is only 90, the privilege would appear on the fret | blush to be an empty pun. Bot it is not co viewed | by those who know the property best of the first (/. ¢. Holder | second) mortgage Honds ave | earnest spplicants for the right of ex hang. ing those bonds, woeth 110, for stock now worth 90, ani the opinion prevails among the leading men in the concern that if the bonds were made convertible the company would have little or no funded debt on the Ist of January next, This opinion, of co rse, rests upon the belief thik whoa the stockholders meet in July they will be | a shown a atatement of the affairs of the company whioh will satisfy ¢hom that the stock ia more valu- tho de- able than the 7 per cont mortgage bonda. question which the shareholders will hav cide, opinions pro and con. may fairly be held. On the one hand, it may be said that itis true of rai roads, aa of individuals, that there is no investment 80 profitable aa paying off one's debts, and that by liquidating the bonded debt of the company the stockholders fortify themselves against a reourrence of hard times and the possi- bility of defaults on coupons. But, on the other hand, if bondholders want to convert, the pre- sumption is that they would gain nothing by doing #0, and it seems unreasonable that the stooklold- ers, who have dispensed with income for #0 many years while their bondholders reccived their inte- rest regularly, should now, on the return of pros-. perity, strip themselves of anything to increase the profits of the bondholdora. In other wonds, it ia expected that the July statement will show that the stock of the Cleveland and Pittsburg may probably be fairly regarded as @ ten per cent stock hereafter. Would it not be fairer, instead of giving the bondholders the right of taking their share of thia ten per cent, to pay them their usual seven per cent and devote the balance to a sinking fund for the extinction of the bonds at maturity? We are authorized by the direction of the Cen- tral American Tranait Company to state that tho rumors of new difficultica on the Jathmua which have found currency in @ city journal are wholly unfounded, The company's latest advices from the State of Nicaragua aro to the effect that the | authorities of that State are prepared to carry out the provisions of the grant in good faith aud to afford every facility to the transit of passengers.
