FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Wapnzspay, May 19-6 P. M. ‘There t no check to the excitement and specu- Jation im stocks. On the contrary, the circle of | mpeculators is steadily increasing, and the large i profits already realized by buyers enable and en- @ourage them to extend their ventures. Thus far ‘every one who has bought stocks has made money, | and there is not the least indication anywhere that | , ‘the end is yet near, The excitement at present is ebiefly on Erie, which sold before the board this morning at 95, at the first board at 92% and 93, at one P. M. at 93%, in the afternoon at 942/, % and 34, and closed at five P. M. at about 9434. Erie ie one of the few remaining stocks | which are earning a large dividend and are still | 200 below par. Central, Hudson River, guaranteed, Harlem preferred, Galena, Toledo, Pacific Mail, Tiinois Central, Michigan Central and Reading, which used. to range near Hrie, are now all ata premium. Of the stocks which are certain, or pretty certain, to pay dividend in July, there are but three—Erie, Pittsburg and Chicago and Alton— which can be bought below par. Hence the re- eent increase of speculation in the stock. At the morning board to-day the movement, as usual in 80 excited a market, was irregular. Pittsburg, which gold at 101 before the board, fell off two per eent; Sonthern old declined %, and Rock Island, Galena and Toledo were not as strong as last evening. On the other hand, Northwestern rose 3 and Mississippi and Missouri &. The common stock of the latter road is thus within 23 per cent of the first mortgage land grant bonds. It is rumored that its recent advance is @ue to operations connected with the Pacific Rail- road. Governments were steady this morning. At the one P. M. call the buoyancy was renewed, and there was an eager inquiry for stocks. Pitts- burg, of which the lower board is supposed to be very short, rose % per cent. In the afternoon the market was very buoyant indeed; the com- mission houses appeared to have orders for every- thing. Canton rose 5 per cent, Northwestern 2, “Toledo %, Hiinois Central 1, Reading 2%, Seuth- ern old 34, guaranteed %. The excitement on Erie was very great indeed, and the price was per 1 eent higher than at the public board. @he busi- ness at the advance was enormous, At the four P.M. call the features of the market were un- @hanged. Every one wanted to buy.
